  • Responsibilities

    Learn to perform construction, production, and renovation tasks including rough carpentry, finish carpentry, and high-performance envelope construction using carpenter’s hand tools, power tools, and job site safety systems. Maintain an orderly and safe site. Learn about and work toward the aesthetic, performance, schedule, and financial goals of the project. Act as a reliable, capable, and supportive member of the crew. They will often work on several projects and sites in the same time period; The Apprentice Carpenter works constantly to uphold our culture, values, and goals. These goals include satisfied customers and excellent work we can be proud to contribute to the community, and attaining the desired profit margin for each job. PROJECT, PRODUCTION, SHOP, AND OPERATIONS ASSISTANCE AND SUPPORT: • Assist and support the Carpenter(s) and Lead Carpenter(s) in projects, production, and operations • Comply with local building codes, and health and safety regulations • Safely operate all forms of carpenter’s hand and power tools (i.e. table saws, circular saws, routers, sanders, ladders, and scaffolding) • Set up and take down poly containment and drop sheets to accommodate work • Erect and disassemble scaffolding, ladders, and other site-based equipment • Demolition and debris disposal including operation of truck and dump trailer • Drive company trucks to transport job trailers to job sites and pick up materials • Practice good housekeeping at all times to ensure a safe and non-cluttered worksite • Proactively communicate job site conditions and concerns that may or are affecting the completion of the job to the appropriate person • Conduct basic troubleshooting and routine maintenance of tools, equipment, trailers, shop, and premises including debris removal, snow removal, and other landscaping duties to create and maintain a clean and safe environment both at the CCI facility and job sites MAINTAIN A CLEAN, SAFE JOB SITE: • Ensure trade partners clean up and maintain a safe workspace • Clean up job sites daily including end-of-day clean-up, job dumpsters, etc. • Conduct yourself safely at all times on the project and follow safe practices in conducting work throughout the day • Use Clar information technology including web-based applications, consistent and timely electronic communications, consistent and proper electronic record keeping, and cell phone protocol • Support the team with administrative tasks and record-keeping 2. CARPENTRY, INSTALLATION, AND PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION: • Follow instructions from Lead Carpenter and Carpenter and use best practices to assist with • Read and interpret plans and blueprints • Work toward a basic understanding of plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and electrical systems • Rough carpentry - including framing of floors and walls; roof framing including cutting rafters; framing of stairs, railings, landings, sheathing, and generally constructing the components of a building project • Perform carpentry functions such as repair/installation of kitchen cabinets, window screens/glass, door locks, and plaster/drywall • Exterior Finishes - Install various types of siding and trim including wood and composite materials; install windows, entry doors, and related hardware; install various drainage plane details • Interior Finishes - fabricate and install various interior trim including interior doors, window, and door casings, baseboard, and stair finishes (skirt board, treads, risers, railings). Fabricate in shop or on-site and install custom components such as custom cabinets, doors, shelving, etc. • Other responsibilities as necessary including all aspects of a construction project such as hand excavation, flashing and air sealing, insulation, drywall, flooring, painting, appliance installation, clean up 3. CLIENT COMMUNICATION AND CUSTOMER SERVICE: • Provide excellent customer service with respect and clear communication • Interact with customers as needed • Report issues to the President as necessary 4. CCI TEAM, EQUIPMENT, AND PROFESSIONAL ADVANCEMENT • Attend and participate fully in company meetings and training as requested • Communicate status reports to company management regularly • Pursue professional development in consultation with the President of Clar Construction Qualifications: Must have valid driver’s license Successfully completed formal carpentry apprenticeship We prefer if you have a high school diploma or GED Strong physical condition and excellent hand dexterity In-depth knowledge of carpentry tools, materials, and techniques REQUIREMENTS: • Must have a basic but solid understanding of carpentry fundamentals in the residential setting and the building and remodeling process • 1+ year experience in Construction / Renovation preferred • Highschool diploma or GED • Understanding of customer service fundamentals • Ability to work within a team or independently as needed • Strong written and verbal communication skills • Basic Mathematical skills • Must be organized, have good verbal and written communication skills, and be a problem solver. • Must be a team player, open-minded, optimistic, and willing to adapt and change to new perspectives. Must have a growth mindset (the curiosity and desire to continue to learn) and the motivation and ability to share knowledge. Most importantly, the Apprentice • Carpenter shares responsibility for the success of the company. • Must have a valid driver’s license and insurance • Must have reliable transportation to be able to report to constantly changing job sites PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS • Comfortable lifting and carrying heavy equipment and materials. Comfortable working in attics, knee walls, basements, and crawlspaces. Comfortable with heights. Comfortable working on ladders and on roofs. Comfortable working outside in a range of seasons and weather conditions. • Frequent lifting from 5-40 lbs • Occasional lifting from 41 lbs + • Access and mobility in tight spaces • Fit Testing – half and full face mask as needed • Working at Heights - over 5 feet, periodically • Sustained periods of standing, sitting, walking, bending, and kneeling APPRENTICE CARPENTER REPORTS TO THE LEAD CARPENTER. HOURS: Generally, 40 hours per week, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Some additional hours are possible as are some weeks with fewer hours, although this is rare. ATTIRE: Clar Construction employees are required to dress neatly and professionally. We will provide shirts with our logo that must be worn at all times. Appropriate footwear and neat pants must be provided by the employee. Compensation: $16 - $25 hourly
