Job Summary
Operating as the public face of A-L, the delivery driver plays a crucial role in the safe and efficient delivery of compressed gas cylinders. Using a company-provided vehicle, such as a tractor-trailer, straight truck, or box truck, employees transport cylinders to local and regional business customers from an A-L branch or plant. This involves the complete cycle of loading, unloading, delivery, and return of compressed gas cylinders, along with frequent interaction with A-L customers. The class of driver, either A or B, is determined by the specific vehicle assigned.
● Responsible for adherence to company policies including safety and the use of personal protective equipment. Working safely is a condition of employment with Airgas. Responsible for reporting any accident or injuries immediately. ● Maintains courteous and professional relationships with our customers while providing them with products and service of exceptional quality. ● Delivers bulk liquid safely to customers. Includes unloading from truck, delivering to customer and supplying proper delivery documentation. ● Uploads, delivers and downloads gases to customers’ vessels in a safe manner. ● Completes all delivery paperwork neatly and thoroughly. Driver Classifications is based on the vehicle driven: o Class A Drivers- Includes any combination of vehicles with a GVWR/GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating/Gross Vehicle Weight) of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR/GVW of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. o Class B Drivers– Any single vehicle with a GVWR/GVW of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds. ● Establishes good customer relations. ● Communicates in person with customers, providing information on ordering, delivery times, etc. ● Provides timely communication back to the distribution manager or customer’s salesman regarding any changes related to the customer. ● Maintains load manifests and all other vehicle documents, ensuring they are properly completed and balanced with truck counts and shipping documents before and after deliveries. ● Performs pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and advises of any needed repairs using the vehicle inspection report form. Have any immediate problems repaired before going on route. ● Assists management in route evaluations and efficiencies. ● Attends at least one safety meeting per month. ● Keeps the inside of trucks clear of paper and trash. ● Responsible for performing on call delivery duties during weekday, after hours, and weekends as assigned by the manager.
Qualifications
Required Education: ● High school diploma, or equivalent is preferred. Required Length and Type of Experience: ● After Driving School minimum age 22 with one year experience driving commercial vehicles with CDL and all required endorsements. Minimum age 23 with 2 years’ experience driving commercial vehicles with CDL and all required endorsements. ● Required to have a hazardous material endorsement, on their CDL or has the ability to obtain the endorsement within a reasonable timeframe established by the Business unit, not to exceed 90 days or upon approval by the business. ● No more than two (2) traffic convictions: OR two (2) at-fault accidents in the last 3 years; or no more than a combination of one (1) traffic conviction and one (1) at-fault accident in the last 3 years. No driving while under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance within the last seven (7) years. ● All new CDL Driver hires must register for the Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and allow A-L consent to review their Clearinghouse record.
