    Title: Clerk

    Location: Virginia Beach, VA

    Payrate: $16.03 per hour
    Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

    Job Overview

    We are seeking a professional and customer-focused Clerk to support the Human Services department in the City of Virginia Beach. This position plays a key role at the front desk and in the customer care communications center, assisting visitors, handling calls, and ensuring excellent service to the public.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Greet and assist visitors, directing them to the appropriate departments or offices
    • Answer and route incoming calls in a professional and timely manner
    • Provide accurate information about Human Services programs, locations, and hours of operation
    • Follow all front desk security procedures and guidelines
    • File, sort, and distribute mail and packages
    • Maintain and update resource information and telephone directories
    • Explain policies, rules, and regulations to customers and staff
    • Operate computer systems for screening and communication purposes
    • Resolve complaints by directing individuals to the appropriate program areas
    • Maintain a professional demeanor when interacting with upset or irate individuals
    • Communicate effectively with staff, clients, and the public both in person and over the phone
    • Follow established city telephone standards
    • Report any threatening or unsafe situations to appropriate personnel

    Qualifications

    • Strong customer service and communication skills
    • Ability to handle high-volume calls and in-person inquiries
    • Professional demeanor and conflict resolution skills
    • Basic computer proficiency
    • Ability to multitask and remain organized in a fast-paced environment
    • Experience in customer service, clerical, or administrative roles preferred

    Work Environment

    • Office setting within a public-facing Human Services department
    • Frequent interaction with the public, including sensitive or high-stress situations
