    Job Description

    The CHEF ASSISTANT ensures clean cooking utensils, chopped ingredients and clean work areas. The Chef Assistant ensures that the ingredients are available, the portions are accurate, and delivery is timely. He/she must possess basic knowledge of food preparation activities, ingredients and food combinations and use this knowledge to assist the Chef in preparing exceptional meals.

    The main duty of Chef Assistant is to ensure all ingredients are available to the Chef without hindrances or delays. He/she works under the direction of the Chef to coordinate and carry out the preparation and delivery of all meals; he/she plates meals for clients and, on occasion, helps arrange sack lunches for extended outings. To work at this position, one must possess basic culinary insight. Knowledge of standard food preparation and storage techniques are considered a plus, as is the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Checking inventory of ingredients daily
    • Acquiring ingredients not available in storage prior to the start of the day
    • Preparing ingredients by chopping vegetables and meats
    • Assisting head Chef in cooking dishes according to set recipes
    • Making arrangements to store food items in a safe and orderly manner
    • Rotating frozen food items as indicated in the kitchen rule book
    • Handing ingredients and utensils to head Chef during food preparation activities
    • Maintaining kitchen order by ensuring cleanliness of tables, counters and work areas
    • Overseeing cleanliness and maintenance of kitchen equipment and utensils
    • Operating kitchen equipment such as ovens and grills for cooking purposes
    • Delivering all meals to surrounding facilities
    • Maintaining knowledge of all recipes so that the head Chef’s position can be covered effectively in case of absenteeism
    • Setting prepared dishes so that they look aesthetically pleasing
    • Ensuring appropriate portions have been dished out
    • Dealing with client and staff complaints and/or suggestions to better satisfy all clients

     

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Minimum of six months restaurant/hotel or banquet cooking experience in position of responsibility 
    • Current valid drivers license 
    • Basic knowledge of gourmet foods and specialty dishes is preferred
    • Experience in baking a plus
    • Must be able to successful obtain all required food safety food handlers card, license, and/or certification
    • Must be able to communicate with persons from all educational and cultural backgrounds
    • Must demonstrate tact, initiative, resourcefulness, a professional manner, enthusiasm, and a non-judgmental attitude
    • This is a FULL-TIME position. The chef assistant will be working 4/10 hour shifts. Open availability including holidays and weekends. Typical workday 6:30am- 5pm.

    This position starts at $20/hour and goes up depending on education and experience.
