    The Company

Our client is operationalizing the largest Earth-exploration mission in human history. They’re doing that by developing robotics & software to explore, map, and classify the entirety of Earth's ocean floor. This technology allows them to collect seafloor data faster, more efficiently, and more cheaply. More importantly, their technology makes ocean mapping safer, with minimal environmental impact, risk of endangered animal takes, and infrastructure damage. The oceans are a critical component of climate stabilization and this company will provide critical subsea data and infrastructure to further understand and predict the fundamental forces that support harmonious human existence on this planet.

All Earth's landmass is mapped, but much of the ocean floor is unmapped. Unmasking these deep corners of the world is finally technically possible, but it hasn't yet been done. Why not?

Right now, subsea surveying is managed by people, not machines, and in largely non-automated ways. If we want to map the entire ocean floor, subsea surveying must be automated. The current state of subsea surveys, and the data they produce, make this just as much a software problem as it is a hardware problem.

    Your Impact

You will help design and build the foundation of their subsea data web application and play a key role in establishing the early software team. You're comfortable handling a very wide range of technical work and a diverse set of tools, libraries, languages, and systems. You will be very much an ocean software engineer: motivated by a connection to our oceans, recognizing their vital roles, and finding challenge in the unique demands of ocean data.

You'll be a critical and influential early team member, working directly with the founders (both product leaning and robotics leaning) and the Head of Cloud Software Engineering to build a new-age subsea data management software system.

    About You

    • 6-8 years of developing software for high-performance or mission-critical applications
    • Developed scalable and secure distributed applications
    • Deep experience building big-data web applications from the ground up and taking ownership and responsibility (Full-Cycle, End-to-End)
    • Transporting and streaming large volumes of data over an unstable connection with error correction, etc.
    • Ability to work in a fluid environment, be self-directed, and well-versed in systems architecture best practices and research
    • Lover of the ocean and has an insatiable desire for adventure and exploration

    Tech

    • JavaScript/Typescript and web application frameworks (e.g., React/Redux); Fluency in Python (and preferably Node.js.) Knowing C and Linux/Unix systems programming is nice to have
    • Postgres/PostGIS / AWS / End-to-End Machine Learning Workflows

This is an equity-heavy position and looking for strong personal alignment on equity desire. Additional Benefits: 80% medical, dental, & vision insurance coverage.

We’re seeking ultra-determined people who aren’t afraid to pioneer new solutions and challenge conventional assumptions. Most of all, we're looking for high-quality, good human beings with low egos.
