    Position Summary

    The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs a wide range of technical, clerical, and information system procedures across Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, and specimen procurement. Operating within established policies and quality control standards, the MLT ensures accurate, timely test results to support high-quality patient care and participates actively in the Laboratory Quality Improvement program.

    Required Licensure & Certifications

    • Phlebotomy: Active Phlebotomist License required.
    • State Licensure: Active Washington State Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist (MA-P) License required.

    Core Responsibilities

    1. Workflow Organization & Data Management (30%)

    • Organize workflow and manage time effectively to complete technical tasks within established turn-around times.
    • Operate and adjust laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and computer systems to calculate, record, evaluate, and transmit test data.

    2. Analytical Testing & Interpretation (30%)

    • Apply professional judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results across all clinical sections, including Hematology, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Serology, Blood Bank, Microbiology, and Urinalysis.
    • Identify specimen abnormalities (e.g., malignancies, bacteria, parasites, or genetic variations).

    3. Equipment & Inventory Maintenance (20%)

    • Maintain instruments and assigned laboratory sections as designated by the Laboratory Manager.
    • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, calibration, and monitoring of inventory/consumables.

    4. Specimen Procurement & Collection (20%)

    • Perform specimen collection (venipuncture, capillary draws, culture swabs) on patients of all age groups.
    • Instruct nursing staff on proper specimen collection methods and procedures.

    Essential Job Duties

    • Testing & Analysis: Conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses on human blood, body fluids (urine, spinal fluid), tissue, and cellular samples; perform blood-typing, compatibility testing, and crossmatching for transfusion services.
    • Quality Assurance: Establish, monitor, and adhere to Quality Control (QC) programs to ensure high analytical accuracy and result integrity.
    • Equipment Calibration & Maintenance: Set up, clean, calibrate, and troubleshoot clinical instruments across chemistry, hematology, coagulation, and microbiology.
    • Communication & Support: Provide technical information regarding test results to physicians, family members, and researchers; guide staff on acceptable laboratory practices.
