    SCIENTIST III – CHEMICAL R&D   

     

    LOCATION: VADNAIS HEIGHTS, MN  

     

    POSITION OVERVIEW

     

    The successful candidate will have established experience with a range of analytical techniques such as gas, liquid, and gel permeation chromatography, infrared spectroscopy and NMR. The successful candidate must be able to apply a fundamental understanding of a broad range of analytical techniques to the characterization of adhesives and complex polymers. Candidates must have strong fundamental chemistry knowledge (organic, analytical, and physical chemistry). They must have a talent for identifying the underlying causes of problems and for making relevant measurements to provide data and information that drive technical solutions. The candidate must be capable of independent work but also able to work with multifunctional teams to enhance characterization efforts. This person will be required to partner effectively with global teams including research scientists, chemists, product development engineers, technicians, and end use customers to prioritize work as necessary. In addition the successful candidate must maintain current knowledge of innovations in analytical techniques and lead their implementation.

     

    PRIMARY DUTIES

     

    This individual will be involved in a variety of analytical activities, including:

     

    • Responsible for analytical technology selection and test method development in support of product development.
    • Applies sound theoretical principles to interpret complex spectra and makes conclusions that address the business needs.
    • Communicate results via regular reports, updates in global team meetings and other venues.
    • Work closely with multiple groups on technical subjects.
    • Support R&D and Manufacturing to develop product specifications and develop production QC.
    • Participates on product development core teams, or technical sub teams.
    • Provides test method validation advice based on conclusions from test method development activities.
    • Maintains instruments in good working condition and provide maintenance as necessary.
    • Maintains a high level of knowledge in the fields of chromatography and spectroscopy along with researching currently available commercial technology.
    • Advises and collaborates with others in research to incorporate the advanced concepts of the field into other groups.
    • Skilled at effectively communicating solutions to problems and advocating appropriate recommendations to technical management and the business community in general.
    • Perform reverse analysis on competitive products and other key samples.
    • Purchase and inventory appropriate levels of consumables and replacement parts.

     

    PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

     

    • Combination of general office environment and laboratory environment
    • 0-80% time spent standing
    • 0-80% time spent sitting
    • 0-80% time spent walking
    • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
    • Some typing required (repetitive motions)
    • Travel up to 10% may be necessary

     

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

     

    • Bachelors Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Chemistry or Materials Science
    • 3+ years' industrial experience
    • Good interpersonal and communication skills are required including the ability to effectively write reports, give presentations, and participate in or lead informal discussions to both the scientific and business communities
    • Demonstrated knowledge of experimental design, modeling and statistical data interpretation
    • Possess hands-on and self-starter qualities
    • Compliance-minded and quality oriented

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

     

    • Experience analyzing adhesives, polymers, paints, or coatings
    • Knowledge of infrared spectroscopy, chromatography, and NMR
    • Project Management Certification or course work
