Irvine, CA

  • Responsibilities

MaxLinear is seeking a Master’s or Ph.D. student for a Systems Engineering Internship in our Irvine, CA design center to work on the development of a power integrity performance prediction tool to provide early prediction of the PDN and support strategic decisions for IC designers. This is a great opportunity to learn about RF Electronics and Engineering concepts such as Network Theory, mathematics including linear algebra, matrix theory, while strengthening software engineering and data acquisition skills. We anticipate this internship being approximately 6 months. In this internship, you will focus on:

    • Interaction with RF/MS IC Design team to create simple behavioral or circuit model of standard IC blocks and on-chip backend (supply network, clock, data-path)
    • Design of a modular calculation tool (using Matlab, Octave or Python) to evaluate package or PCB parasitics based on architectural inputs including number of layers, dielectric materials, routing density, via and pin count
    • Validation of the results using MaxLinear’s production-level ICs as a test vehicle
    • Establishing standard operating procedure for SI/PI hybrid simulation and design

    Required Skills

    • Good understanding of linear circuits theory
    • Numerical computing (MATLAB, Octave or alternative object-oriented programming such Python or C++)
    • Ability to independently conduct electrical measurements
    • Able to write test plans, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and properly document design and test results
    • Experience with DC and RF probe stations
    • MS or Ph.D. student in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science

    Background on the Internship

Maxlinear develops high-performance SoCs (Systems-on-Chip) for infrastructure applications including, but not limited to:  Optical DSP for large-scale Datacenters, Microwave and mmW Backhaul, sub-6GHz 5G base station transceivers and high-performance power management systems.

As SoC designs are converging towards higher integration and diversified functionalities, RF/Analog and Digital blocks often share power supplies from centralized off-chip sources. Power integrity plays a critical role in the system-level performance where a variety of coupling mechanisms through the power and signal delivery networks can degrade the chip’s performance. The simulation of complex Power Delivery Networks (PDNs) is a time-consuming task that usually requires some basic IC backend, package and PCB layout efforts for parasitic RLC extraction. With the increased complexity of SoCs, it is more challenging to make architectural decisions at an early stage in the product development cycle.

    COMPANY OVERVIEW

MaxLinear is a global, New York Stock Exchange-traded company (NYSE: MXL) where the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well. We are a fabless system-on-chip product company, designing highly integrated, radio-frequency, and mixed-signal Communications ICs for broadband and infrastructure applications.

We hire the best people in the world and engage them in some of the most exciting opportunities in our broadband and infrastructure markets. Our growth has come from innovative, bold approaches to solving some of the world’s most challenging communication technology problems.

MaxLinear began by developing the World’s first high-performance TV tuner chip using standard CMOS process technology. Others said we couldn’t achieve the extremely high performance requirements using CMOS, but we proved them wrong and achieved enduring global market leadership with our designs. Since then, we’ve developed a full line of products for satellite communications, cable modems, and terrestrial TV; diversified into high speed products addressing Datacom applications such as 400 Gbps fiber-optic interconnect chips for high-speed networks; and MoCA technology for home networking.

Our headquarters is in Carlsbad, near San Diego, California. We also have major design centers in Irvine and San Jose, CA; in Vancouver, Canada; in Valencia, Spain; and in Bangalore, India.

We have approximately 800 employees, a substantial majority of whom have engineering degrees, and include masters and Ph.D. graduates from many of the premiere universities around the world. Our engineers thrive on innovation, outstanding execution, outside-the-box thinking, nimbleness, and collaboration. Together, we form a high-energy business team that is focused on building great products.
