VETERANS BENEFITS SPECIALIST / SCHOOL CERTIFYING OFFICIAL (SCO)

This position will report to the VA Compliance Manager and serves as the subject matter experts on all Veteran-related activities.  Candidates must have a strong desire to promote Coding Dojo's mission among Veteran and military-connected students – “Transforming Veterans' lives through programming literacy”.  Ideal candidates will have experience in communicating with Veterans, VA beneficiaries, military service members, and the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA).

Candidates must live within commuting distance of our San Jose or Burbank, California campuses.  The positions will serve remotely (telework) until January 2022; at which time they will transition to full-time on-site work, located at our campuses.  The Veterans Benefits Specialists' primary responsibility is accurately reporting student enrollments in the VA's database (VA-ONCE) and communicating directly with the Department of Veterans Affairs on behalf of the school and our Veteran students.  The Veterans Benefits Specialists will act as the eyes and ears on campus, in regards to all Veteran related issues, and collaborate with onsite faculty, staff, and leadership to address and resolve concerns.

DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

• Provide excellent customer service to prospective Veteran-students over phone, email, and during walk-in inquiries.
• Assist with all matters related to VA Education Benefits and Veteran student enrollments.
• Verifying students' VA education benefits eligibility and assists students in the DVA application process.
• Processing of DVA related applications, certifications, and supplementary documentation.
• Ensuring required documentation is completed and collected prior to student enrollment.
• Maintaining academic, financial, and DVA entitlement records in compliance with school and DVA recordkeeping policies.
• Submit certification of Veteran student enrollments through DVA's web-based database. 
• Provide administrative support to Veteran students during admissions, attendance, graduation, and Career Services. 
• Ensure Veteran students are awarded applicable scholarships and discounts in accordance with school and DVA policies.
• Monitor students' performance to ensure standards of academic progress are met; report unsatisfactory progress or attendance to DVA.
• Confirm that graduation requirements are met and report course completion to DVA.
• Provide input and feedback on the Veteran Information Bulletin section of the school's catalog.
• Monitor Veteran and non-Veteran student populations and assist in compiling quarterly DVA demographic reports.
• Monitor DVA regulations, policies, and communications for actions that will affect Veteran students' entitlements and/or tuition payments.
• Maintain currency on DVA's SCO training requirements through web-based training, self-study, and other professional development opportunities.
• monitor student records and accounts to verify accurate documentation and compliance with DVA regulatory requirements.
• Escort and host State and Federal regulators during routine and unannounced site visits; facilitate compliance survey inspection conducted by DVA and the California Veterans Affairs.
• Participate in open house events and provide campus tours to prospective Veteran students.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must complete DVA's School Certifying Official online training within 30-days of starting.
• High School Diploma or equivalent. 
• 2 years' experience in recordkeeping, accounting, or similarly related work requiring confidentiality and attention to detail.
• Knowledgeable of Veterans' Education Benefits (Chapters 30, 31, 33, 35, and 1606).
• Experience communicating with Military Veterans and their families.
• Ability to work independently and exercise good judgement while supervised remotely.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills both oral and written; ability to communicate within a team and with external agencies to facilitate working relationships.
• Experience reading and interpreting government regulations, codes, policies, and SOPs.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat Pro.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Associates Degree or Technical Certificate related to Office or Business Administration.
• Previously employed as a School Certifying Official or VA Work Study who assisted with SCO duties.
• Experience working with VA-ONCE and other DVA web-based systems.
• Experience using Customer Relationship Management (CRM) or similar systems.
• Previous experience working remotely and among geographically dispersed workforces.
• Student services, academic advising, and/or financial services experience.
