  • Responsibilities

    As a patent engineer, you will be learning about different kinds of cutting edge technology every day.  One day you may be working on new computer vision technology and another on the latest developments in blockchain.  Rather than being pigeonholed, there is an endless variety of work.  Most of our clients are startups, and you will have the opportunity to work with startup founders and inventors who are building exciting, high-growth companies.

    We aren't a traditional law firm.  Cognition IP is building a new law firm model focused on using technology to make the process of obtaining patents easier and faster for startups.  We are backed by Y Combinator and other top-tier Silicon Valley investors and are building new kinds of workflow and AI technologies to make the process of doing legal work faster and easier.

    This role entails interviewing inventors and clients to learn about their invention, performing patent searches, and drafting patent applications and responses under the guidance of an attorney.  You will be asked to pick up and understand new technology areas quickly and will be doing significant writing.

    You will also have the opportunity to provide input to our development team on tools they can build to make your work easier.

    KEY RESULT AREAS:

    1. Developing an understanding about different technology areas quickly
    2. Perform quality technical writing in drafting patent applications, responding to office actions, searching, and drafting opinions
    3. Develop and maintain rapport with startup founders and inventors
    4. Provide input on new technological tools being created by our development team

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

    1. Strong academic background in the sciences or engineering
    2. Strong writing ability and interest in writing on a daily basis
    3. Interest in learning patent law
    4. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

    1. Experience with patent drafting, prosecution, or analysis
    2. Experience with client interaction
    3. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering
