PATH, in partnership with the Siemens Foundation, is seeking a cohort of eight students to join the competitive Siemens Foundation-PATH Fellowship Program. The program engages science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) students in innovative, hands-on assignments that serve society by accelerating high-impact, low-cost solutions to some of the world’s most pressing health needs. 

This valuable learning opportunity is hosted by PATH, a leading global health innovation organization, and supported by the Siemens Foundation. Through targeted investments, the Siemens Foundation advances workforce development and education initiatives in STEM. Its mission is inspired by the culture of innovation, research, and continuous learning that is the hallmark of Siemens' companies. 

Based in PATH’s Seattle, Washington office, fellows are provided a meaningful research and/or laboratory experience and exposed to career opportunities in global health. Students will be supported by mentors in both organizations.

TERM: Three-month, full-time assignment, May through August 2020 or June through September 2020 (flexible) 

ESTIMATED NUMBER OF HOURS PER WEEK: 40 

LOCATION OF FELLOWSHIP: Seattle, WA 

STIPEND: $3,000/month; $9,000 total per fellow 

HOUSING: $1,400/month; $4,200 total per fellow  

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:  

The Diagnostics Program at PATH conducts research and development, technical evaluation, introduction, and technology transfer of low-cost, rapid, novel and easy to use diagnostic tests that are appropriate for use in developing country health systems. We will be recruiting for five fellows to support a variety of diagnostics related projects and special initiatives.  

• LABORATORY FELLOWS: Three fellows will be assigned to laboratory-based projects.  Examples of past projects include: developing testing methods for diagnosing tuberculosis, increasing sensitivity in malaria lateral flow tests and developing an affordable self-test for HIV.  

• DATA SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FELLOWS: Two fellows will be assigned to data and technology project. Examples of past projects include: Analyzing the process and results of a new malaria diagnostic.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:  

• Current enrollment in a two year/ technical college or undergraduate program in a STEM related area of study (e.g., engineering, laboratory science, data science, mathematics, biology, biochemistry, machine technology, computer science etc.). Applicants must intend to enroll in the fall 2020 term to qualify.  
• Familiarity with applying the scientific method. 
• Ability to participate in experiment design, data recording, analysis and interpretation and ability to report out and present results.  
• Experience with lab safety, procedures, techniques and etiquette, AND/OR experience applying mathematics and coding and familiarity with data analysis software (e.g., R, Stata, etc.) 
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-based environment and ability to execute independently.  
• Interest in technologies and global public health. 
• Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills.  
• Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent presentation skills in English.  
• Strong attention to detail.  
• Ability to use MS Office Suite, especially Word and Excel.
