Financial Planning and Analysis Manager

Irvine, CA

    Job Description

    • DO YOU SPEAK THE LANGUAGE OF FINANCE FLUENTLY, ESPECIALLY WHEN APPLIED TO A SMALL BUSINESS?
    • _ARE YOU AT YOUR BEST WHEN ANALYZING AND COMMUNICATING FINANCIAL DATA?     _
    • WOULD YOU LIKE TO PUT YOUR SKILLS TO WORK AT A COMPANY THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS?

If so, you just might be the financial planning and analysis manager we’re looking for to become the next great addition to our Collegewise and Summer Discovery teams.

    WHAT’S THE JOB?

Your mission will be to provide the crucial financial data and analysis our executive team needs as Collegewise and Summer Discovery grow, scale, and change the lives of the high school families we work with.

That means you’ll drive and take responsibility for:

    • ANALYSIS AND KPIS: Do we have the financial data we need to evaluate our business? Are those findings timely and accurate? And most importantly, can you tease out the trends and hidden insights that might not be so obvious with NetSuite alone? We need a talented human to do it, and that’s where success starts in this role.
    • BUDGETING AND FORECASTING: Are you an all-star at Excel? In this role, you’ll own the annual budget processes, as well as multi-year forecasting and interim updates, for both businesses. Advanced Excel modeling skills are critical as we continue to automate our finance operations and improve our analysis.
    • M&A: The right candidate will be building our M&A models, analyzing the data and making recommendations to support our growing businesses. Prior involvement with the M&A process is highly desirable.
    • PRESENTATION: In this role, you’ll need to take over the building of PowerPoint decks detailing financials and analytical requirements for monthly Board meetings as well as budgets and M&A. There’s an art to doing that well, and our successful FP&A manager will own the process.
    • COMMUNICATION: A successful candidate will be very comfortable deep in the numbers but also when explaining their findings to a non-financial business manager. The position is based in the Collegewise offices on the west coast but will also be supporting the Summer Discovery business on the east coast.
    • COACHING AND DEVELOPING: Talented employees want to experience the thrill of getting even better and making meaningful progress in their careers. We want to cross-train the finance team to make sure each member has plenty of opportunities to learn and grow. From finding and sharing best financial practices to becoming a vocal champion for finance and accounting, you’ll lead—and teach—by example.
    • SEEKING OPPORTUNITIES TO CONTRIBUTE: We are two lean organizations where people are far more likely to ask, “How can I help?” than they are to say, “That’s not my job.” Our finance team is new and scaling for significant revenue growth, and everyone will be asked to pitch in to help all of us achieve our goals together.

    WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We’re looking for someone who makes work a way of life without making it your actual life. You’ll work hard, but we care more about the heart you bring and the impact you make than we do the sheer number of hours you’re willing to put in. You're ready to commit to a calling that matters to you, and you have high expectations of yourself, your job, and your employer.

You’re at your best when you’re analyzing, interpreting, and communicating financial data. You get excited by the prospect of performing higher level finance and operational data analytics, and presenting your findings in a comprehensive and coherent way to the executive leadership of our two educational businesses.

Experience is important. We’re looking for someone with a demonstrated track record of success (at least 5-7 years) in an FP&A role, preferably trained at either a private equity owned or a large corporation. A CPA would be a plus. You’re able to show the value your work and talent brought to your previous place(s) of work. And you have a strong understanding of GAAP principles.

You thrive on taking care of things the right way the first time. You’re precise and organized. You take pride in the trust others place in you when you say, “I’ll get it done.

We recognize and reward contributors who eagerly pitch in, who leave work a little better off than they found it each day, and who pair a drive for individual success with a joy in bringing others along for the ride.

Bottom line: our business should be better with you in it. We have very high expectations for this role, and we’ll pair them with a willingness to listen, an openness to change, and a commitment to supporting you in pursuit of it all. If you're someone who will challenge yourself and your team to continuously improve, who will build a positive, engaging work environment, and who is comfortable creating both the structure and the processes to help the people you manage do their very best work, you may be the candidate we're looking for.

    SALARY, START DATE, AND LOCATION

For someone with compelling experience, we are prepared to offer a competitive salary, with annual bonuses and room for future growth in both pay and responsibility. We’d like our new manager to start as soon as possible, but we can adjust the start date to accommodate the right person. You’ll work at the Collegewise corporate headquarters in Irvine, California, while also supporting the New York-based Summer Discovery business.

    HOW TO APPLY

We really enjoy working with people who are clear thinkers and equally clear communicators.

And you’re more interesting than a generic “insert-name-of-company-here” letter. So please be yourself and use your letter to help us understand who you are and why you want this job, not just any job. You might also consider checking out our five tips for job-seekers.

Then submit your information at the right. When you paste your cover letter into the text box, your formatting will hold up when we see it (but if it doesn’t, we’ll blame the text box, not you).

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU

If you’re excited about this opportunity but unsure if you’re the right fit, we hope you’ll take a shot. There is no such thing as a perfect applicant (or a perfect job, for that matter). And we promise to give a fair and thorough read to every applicant who takes the time to submit a thoughtful application to us.

We also understand that the more we embrace diversity of age, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, ethnicity, and perspective, the stronger the company we’ll be able to build together. Creating an environment where everyone, from any background, can do their best work is the right thing to do. And we hope you’re excited to embrace and contribute to our efforts.

Thanks for reading our post. We’d love to hear from you, but if we don’t, we hope you find the perfect professional fit someplace else.
