  • Responsibilities

    Committee for Children is growing, and we're looking for an EDITOR to join us for a part-time temporary position! In this role, you'll edit, proofread, and QC content for an online middle school curriculum, which may include lessons, teacher and student materials, web copy, UX microcontent, videos, scripts, closed captioning and video screen text, social media, and/or product-related marcomm content. You'll work on content both in and outside of a content management system (CMS), and will also collaborate with the full editorial team to ensure continuity of voice, style, UX language, and brand across products. Although most of the work will be at the copy-editing level, some developmental editing may be necessary.

    THIS IS A PART-TIME, TEMPORARY POSITION (15 – 20 HOURS PER WEEK), WITH AN ESTIMATED LENGTH OF 11 MONTHS (TO JULY 2020) ON A 1099 CONTRACT BASIS.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Perform developmental, copy editing, and proofreading on components of a digital curriculum for middle school students, both in and outside of a CMS
    • Collaborate with a product team to create user-friendly, effective, and pedagogically sound curriculum materials
    • Collaborate with the product editor to ensure in-product messaging, UX/interface copy, navigational nomenclature, and other digital content is clear, consistent, and inclusive within and across products and that in-house styles for UX and microcopy are followed
    • Ensure content changes are consistent with established standards and guidelines
    • Help Marcomm editor review materials related to their assigned product for accuracy and consistency with product terminology and content
    • Check to ensure assets in the CMS for the assigned product are properly tagged
    • Become knowledgeable and proficient in correcting content within the CMS

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education

    • Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) from a 4-year accredited college or university in a related field OR equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities

    Experience

    • 4 or more years of experience with web publishing, content management systems, and basic HTML; Markdown a plus
    • 4 or more years of freelance or in-house editing experience
    • Experience with tagging in a content management system preferred
    • Experience working on an Agile team preferred
    • Experience in EdTech or working on a digital product preferred
    • UX writing experience a plus

    Editing and Writing Skills

    • Knowledge of the mechanics and application of all levels of editorial work: writing, developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading for both print and web
    • Thorough understanding of grammar, style, and current English usage
    • Working understanding of the Chicago Manual of Style, ability to use and adhere to a house-specific style guide, and ability to edit to a variety of style specifications and audiences
    • Excellent fact-checking skills with strong attention to detail

    CMS and Software Skills

    • Experience working in a CMS or with asset management required; familiarity with Contentful and WordPress a plus
    • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Word, including use of the style palette, and basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Outlook
    • Working knowledge of project management software required; familiarity with Jira a plus
