    Organization overview

WiscNet was established in 1989 as one of the first statewide education, research, and public service data network associations in the United States. Today, WiscNet is a non-profit membership association that provides Wisconsin’s research and education platform in support of a vibrant membership community. WiscNet member organizations include the Wisconsin Technical College System, Wisconsin’s private colleges and universities, libraries and library systems, health care facilities, agencies of the State of Wisconsin, city and county governments, and public and private K-12 school districts. WiscNet is governed by an elected Board of Directors and is funded by membership fees.

    About the Role

WiscNet is looking for a creative, collaborative Communications & Marketing Specialist to join our Member Engagement team. This new role will help shape how we share WiscNet’s story with our members and the broader community through thoughtful communication, engaging content, and consistent messaging. You’ll be responsible for managing written communications and marketing efforts, including emails, newsletters, event promotion and website updates. You’ll also play a key role in supporting WiscNet events and helping us connect with members through new channels — including building out the WiscNet Secure Platform Slack instance and developing a social media strategy that reflects how we want to support our members. At WiscNet, communication isn’t just about what we say — it’s about how we show up. We’re looking for someone who communicates with empathy, curiosity, and clarity, and who helps strengthen the connections that make this community so special. If you love building relationships, crafting stories, and communicating ideas clearly and creatively, we’d love to meet you.

    What You’ll Do

    • Create clear, compelling written content for a variety of platforms — including newsletters, email campaigns, website updates, event materials, and internal communications.
    • Support event planning and promotion for WiscNet events, both virtual and in-person.
    • Help maintain and strengthen WiscNet’s brand voice and visual identity across all written and digital communications.
    • Represent WiscNet’s brand and values in all external communications and member interactions, ensuring a consistent, welcoming tone and professional presence.
    • Collaborate with other teams to ensure consistent messaging and brand alignment across all communications.
    • Contribute ideas and creative approaches to enhance how WiscNet tells its story and serves its members.
    • Build and manage engagement through the WiscNet Secure Platform Slack community.
    • Develop and implement a social media strategy that strengthens awareness and engagement.
    • Communicate with empathy, curiosity, and clarity reflecting WiscNet’s commitment to connection, collaboration, and community in every interaction.

    What We’re Looking For

    • Creative communicator: You bring fresh ideas and innovative thinking to your work, adapting your tone and style to match WiscNet’s voice and writing content that connects with different audiences across multiple formats.
    • Detail-oriented editor: You bring a sharp eye for grammar and consistency, ensuring every piece of writing is polished and professional.
    • Collaborative and thoughtful: You work well with colleagues across roles, communicate with openness, appreciate the strength that comes from diverse viewpoints, and value being a team player. You manage multiple projects with ease and follow through reliably.
    • Member-focused and detail-oriented: You take pride in careful, high-quality work — and extend that same care to events, paying attention to details and doing what you can to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable.
    • Adaptable and growth-oriented: You’re flexible and open, comfortable adjusting as priorities evolve, and motivated to keep growing your skills while exploring new ways to serve members and tell WiscNet’s story.
    • Mission-driven and member-focused: You share WiscNet’s nonprofit values of service and collaboration, and take the time to understand members’ needs so you can help support them.

    Preferred Qualifications and Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in professional writing, communications, marketing, journalism, English, or a related field — or equivalent professional experience.
    • Minimum five years of experience in communications or marketing.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate complex or technical topics into clear, approachable language.
    • Experience writing for multiple formats and audiences, including newsletters, web, email, and social media (portfolio preferred).
    • Experience managing or contributing to social media channels, including content creation, scheduling, and engagement tracking.
    • Familiarity with content management systems (such as Squarespace) and email marketing platforms (such as HubSpot).
    • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
    • Experience supporting events and promotions, both in-person and virtual.
    • Comfort with technology and a willingness to learn new tools or platforms (bonus points for Slack expertise!)
    • Knowledge of or experience in education, libraries, or nonprofit sectors is a plus.
    • Please submit your résumé, a brief cover letter, and a few writing samples (or a link to yourportfolio).
