POSITION: Community Organizer
STATUS: Full-time
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Citizenship and Immigration Program Director
PAY RATE: $50,000 - $55,000 a year
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Community Organizer will support and advance advocacy campaigns that promote pro-immigrant policies and benefit Latino and low-income communities. This position focuses on participating in local, state, and national efforts to influence legislation and public policy, while also mobilizing community members to take part in civic actions such as rallies, marches, public testimony, and storytelling. The organizer will play a critical role in amplifying community voices, providing education, and ensuring that residents are informed, engaged, and empowered to advocate for change.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Policy Advocacy & Campaign Participation
· Participate in existing advocacy campaigns that support immigrant rights and promote equity at the local, state, and federal levels.
· Attend meetings with elected officials and advocacy coalitions to share community priorities and support pro-immigrant legislation.
· Track relevant legislation and executive actions; prepare briefings and updates for community members and SCC leadership.
· Represent SCC in coalitions, task forces, and public forums.
Community Mobilization & Civic Engagement
● Encourage and prepare community members to participate in public actions including marches, rallies, legislative visits, and public hearings.
● Support individuals in sharing their personal stories and lived experiences to influence policy and public opinion.
● Coordinate outreach to increase civic participation, voter engagement, and public awareness of key issues affecting the immigrant community.
Community Education & Workshop Facilitation
● Plan and facilitate community education workshops related to, but not limited to:
o Know Your Rights
o Protecting Your Assets
o Building an Emergency Family Plan for Deportation
o Workers’ Rights
o Immigration Relief Options
o Other trainings that align with SCC’s mission and service areas.
● Create culturally and linguistically appropriate materials and presentations for diverse audiences.
● Host forums and informational sessions to deepen understanding of pressing issues and promote community-driven solutions.
Volunteer Recruitment & Leadership Development
● Recruit, train, and mentor Community Navigators—volunteers who assist the immigrant community by facilitating educational workshops, providing referrals, and offering accompaniment.
● Provide support to Community Navigators to ensure accurate information, cultural responsiveness, and effective engagement.
● Foster leadership development among volunteers and community members to strengthen grassroots advocacy and build a sustainable base of local leaders.
● Perform other duties as assigned or needed.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
· Bachelor’s degree in public policy, social work, political science, community development, or a related field
· Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in community organizing, advocacy, or civic engagement, preferably in immigrant or low-income communities.
· Fluent in both Spanish and English.
· Proven ability to mobilize and motivate individuals and groups to take collective action.
· Strong public speaking, facilitation, and storytelling skills.
· Familiarity with state and federal legislative processes, particularly those affecting immigrants and working-class communities.
· Demonstrated experience working with volunteers and/or developing community leadership.
· Strong time management, follow-through, and project coordination skills.
· Comfort working independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
· Deep commitment to immigrant justice, racial equity, and grassroots power-building.
· Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & SCHEDULE:
· Hybrid work schedule.
· Typical schedule is Monday–Friday, 9 AM–5 PM.
· Occasional travel for advocacy events and coalition activities.
· Availability required for evening and weekend programming.
