One of the ways CMHS serves children and youth is by providing them intensive out-of-home treatment through our Treatment Family Home (TFH) Program. This program is for children and youth with emotional/behavioral challenges and mental health diagnoses that can be addressed in a therapeutic home environment. We are looking for the right people to join us and be trained to become Professional Parents in this program.

A Professional Parent uses their home and their experience to care for a client and help them function better in their natural home. The Professional Parent has a primary role in the client’s therapeutic interventions and supports. The goal is to successfully transition the client back to their own home, family, and community.

The client may stay with the Professional Parent for several weeks up to several months depending on their needs and progress. Treatment Family Homes may also provide Respite Care for a few days, during times when a client and family are working through a brief crisis.

A Professional Parent works closely with their client and the client’s parents to help them build trust, improve communication, effectively solve problems together, and much more. They also have a partnering role with the client’s caseworker, schools, and other community agencies.

This is a contract position. The contractor must be at least 25 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent. The contractor must pass State background checks, complete our initial training, and then be licensed by the State of Missouri. We will guide you through the whole process. All adults who live or visit the home must also pass a background check.

Some form of work experience with children and teenagers is desirable, but not required. Your life experience and wisdom count. What we really want is someone who has the qualities to help kids deeply and to mentor parents.

    Essential Duties:

Participate in developing an individualized Treatment Plan for the client. This requires attendance at a twice-monthly Treatment Review meeting and other coordinating activities.

Implement the Treatment Plan by applying interventions and by other involvements in the client’s behavior.

Help the client’s parents become more effective with their child by modelling and coaching them toward improved relational and communication skills with their child.

Complete clinical documentation. This requires creation of a Daily Progress Note for the client to record their progress toward treatment goals. On this document the Professional Parent records their observations of important therapeutic topics and concerns. This document must meet clinical standards as trained by CMHS.

Work collegially with other Professional Parents, our TFH Leaders and other mental health agencies.

Pay: The pay for this work is based on the service type and clinical intensity, ranging from $61.92 to $120.00 per bed night.

Location: We’re looking for Professional Parents in Eastern Jackson County who want to use their home and their experience to help children and teenagers do better in life.
