    SR. DATA ENGINEER

    SAN FRANCISCO, CA

My client ecommerce company is hiring! We're looking for a data engineer with engineering experience to join our engineering team of 6, and company of 40. You'll guide our data architecture, prioritize and implement ETL to unify disparate systems, own the BI/Analytics stack for the entire company, and operationalize valuable ad-hoc analysis.

We're a fast growing ecommerce company with a ton of fascinating operational complexity, and a unique, mission-driven take on the massive consumer packaged goods market. We pride ourselves on being a responsive, responsible, and effective engineering team that prides itself for building great products, and solving business problems with technology.

Here are a few representative things you would accomplish in your first six months:

    1. The operations & fulfillment team needs to measure labor cost per order shipped. You create an ETL pipeline to pull variable labor cost into an analytics database, marry it to our ecommerce data, and create fields in our BI tools so operations can build the reports they need.

    2. Dig in and tune our Redshift cluster by identifying what reports and queries are under heavy usage, but not performing how they should be.

    3. Take a tricky piece of analysis from an IPython notebook, and turn it into great, production-ready code that can be used across the company.

    4. Work with the rest of the engineering organization to build out the monitoring and alerting story for sync jobs that go awry; ML training jobs that fail; and generally be responsible for the integrity of our analytics systems.

    5. Assist in hiring a data analyst to support your work, and help the organization make better data-driven decisions.

You like solving real problems, you're great at working with new APIs, and you make your colleagues better at their jobs. You know to think clearly about tradeoffs. You know to ask why and are the person who discovers that, when someone is asking for a shovel, maybe they really need a hole.

We are primarily a Python shop, with lots of SQL. The BI stack as it exists today consists of Redshift, Looker, Python + Airflow, and off the shelf ETL tools. We don't expect candidates to have deep experience in our precise technology stack, but do expect demonstrated knowledge of great data architecture and infrastructure. We also hope you will bring your experience and opinions to bear, and teach us that we should have been using Kafka.

We write tests, we contribute to open source (and create a lot of it. We practice continuous integration & deployment (a typical day sees 4-5 production deploys), and we focus on shipping working technology with measurable outcomes. Our office doesn't have nerf guns, our snack selection is erratic, and we celebrate real revenue milestones, not fundraising goals. We do have 2 office dogs, and we're in a beautiful open office (with a 4:1 ratio of employees to conference rooms) just off Polk St in San Francisco.

Everyone who works here is nice, respects everyone else, works hard, and is good at their jobs. We've grew 4x in the past year, and plan on doing it again in the next 12 months. It's a heck of a lot of fun, and we'd love to tell you more about it.

    Let’s do this

We're building a diverse and inclusive workplace where we learn from each other. We welcome people of different backgrounds, experiences, abilities and perspectives. We are an equal opportunity employer and a fun place to work. Come join the community at Grove. It's a heck of a lot of fun, and we'd love to tell you more about it.
