    Job Description

    We are seeking a Financial Manager! You will be responsible for the effective management and profitable operation of your assigned branch office.

    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Financial Manager is responsible for managing the day to day operations of the Accounting Department and is responsible for all accounting functions for Congregation Beth Am. Provides support on financial, contractual and budgeting issues. This position also includes the management of Human Resources, and the coordination of all ancillary services. Works closely with the Executive Director and Treasurer ensuring that appropriate explanations of financial information is provided to lay leaders of the congregation.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Works closely with Executive Director in budgeting process, providing reports, forecasts, information and analysis supporting budget planning.
    • Reconciles and prepares monthly financial statements for synagogue and adjunct programming.
    • In collaboration with Executive Director and insurance professionals, reviews and makes recommendations to property, casualty, liability and auto coverages.
    • Creates appropriate management reporting tools that help in the development and tracking of synagogue financial goals. Assists lay and staff leadership in reviewing options relating to programs and overall operations.
    • Oversees accounting systems – effectiveness, upgrades and relationships to other synagogue databases.
    • Appropriately manages the balance sheet and working capital to keep cash flow strong. Reviews accounts payable and accounts receivable.
    • Oversees collection efforts on member accounts, working with Executive Director, Member Services and Department Heads, where appropriate.
    • Manages banking relationships.
    • Coordinates and assists with financial audits.
    • Prepares local/state tax returns and others as maybe needed. Ensures regulatory compliance and that the synagogue maintains its tax exempt status.
    • Assures that numerous transactions of the Accounting Department are properly executed with appropriate internal controls.
    • Administers benefit and payroll administration. Reviews and make recommendations to benefit program.
    • Ensures compliance with all federal, state and local tax law including payroll, sales tax and other applicable taxes.
    • Supervises, trains, organizes and develops accounting staff. Completes performance evaluations and provides regular feedback.
    • Other duties, as determined by Executive Director.

    WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

    • Reports to the Executive Director.
    • Along with Executive Director, acts as a staff liaison to Finance and Building Committees; interacts with other board and committee members as needed.
    • Works with outside CPA firm, technology and accounting software consultants and insurance professionals.

    JOB LOCATION:

    The duties of this position are normally conducted at a desk. Some travel to conferences, seminars, or meetings may be required. Attendance at evening and weekend meetings is occasionally required.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

    • Thorough working knowledge of accounting principles and standards (GAAP).
    • Professional knowledge and proficiency with general ledger based computerized accounting systems.
    • Thorough understanding of consolidated multi-program financial reporting systems.
    • Experience working in a non profit environment is desired.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s degree or certificated program in accounting or business.
    • Five to seven years of experience in finance, accounting and financial reporting systems; three plus management/supervisory experience.
    • Experience in working in a fully computerized environment is required.
    • Experience in non profit fund accounting preferred.
    • Must have high degree of skill in data conversion and program software upgrades as required from time to time. Can effectively communicate issues and accounting requirements to IT staff and software program developers.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to explain accounting data.
    • Proficient in the design and use of complex Excel computer spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations. Working knowledge of QuickBooks is highly preferred.
    • Knowledge of Jewish customs, practices and culture is helpful.

    WORK HOURS REQUIRED PER WEEK AND WORK SCHEDULE:

    This is a full time, exempt position. Regular punctual attendance is required. Additional hours to include evenings are sometimes required.

    Congregation Beth Am is a Conservative congregation in the heart of North County, San Diego (Carmel Valley – just 4 miles east of Del Mar, California) where we come together to celebrate our traditions, learn, worship, and embrace Tikkun Olam (charity and repairing the world). Congregation Beth Am is a large and vibrant synagogue, with a membership of approximately 500 families. The Congregation has an outstanding Early Childhood Center (ages 6 weeks to 5 years), Jewish Learning Center (Supplemental Education Program – grades K-6), Teen Education Programs (grades 7-12), and an active Youth Program, Men’s Club and Women’s Circle. Additionally, the Congregation has robust programming and excellent spiritual leadership with two long-serving Rabbis. In 2017, Congregation Beth Am completed the build out of its beautiful campus that features a brand-new Early Childhood Center, Administrative wing, and Education building.
