    POSITION SUMMARY: The New York City Department of Education (DOE) is the largest school system in the nation, with nearly 1.1 million students, 135,000 employees, including more than 70,000+ teachers and an annual budget of $24.0B.

     

    The Superintendent of Leadership and Professional Learning will be responsible for facilitating the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Superintendent’s leadership development. The Superintendent of Leadership and Professional Learning will help to strengthen the role of Principal Supervisors and others leaders by implementing a plan for professional development differentiating between the needs of potential, new, and experienced principal supervisors in the areas of professional leadership practice in order to promote instructional coherence, build capacity to meet leadership competencies, and effectively align resources. The Superintendent of Leadership will also be responsible for collaboratively creating a curriculum framework for professional learning and evaluating the effectiveness of the professional development. The Superintendent of Leadership will implement a cohesive professional framework that aligns to the vision and mission of the DOE for system-level leaders. Performs related work.

     

    REPORTS TO:  Senior Superintendent within the Office of the First Deputy Chancellor

     

    DIRECT REPORTS:  Teacher Team Leader, Consultants, Leadership Coaches anticipated in Summer 2019  

     

    KEY RELATIONSHIPS: Office of Leadership, Executive Superintendents, Office of Curriculum Instruction and Professional Learning, Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality, and the CSA-Executive Leadership Institute

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    • Partner to develop sustainable models for leadership development at all levels beginning with teachers through system-level leaders.
    • In consultation with superintendent focus groups, develop a clear leadership competency that supports the work of superintendents and aligns to the ISSLC standards and DOE Leadership Competencies.
    • In consultation with the Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Learning, identify professional development strategies aligned to the revised Superintendent job description, Chancellor priorities, and related core competencies.
    • Develop a program for experienced principal supervisors on how to provide differentiated principal support.
    • Collaborate with the Chief Human Capital Office, Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality, and the Office of Leadership.
    • Create and integrate a program evaluation model using established protocols to refine principal supervisor professional development plans.
    • Consult with well-known principal supervisor leadership programs to discuss professional offerings.
    • Develop a focus group of experienced educators and principal supervisors to identify candidates for the leadership pipeline for superintendents.
    • Work across all divisions within the Department of Education to identify areas of needed professional development for principal supervisors.
    • Conduct regular focus groups with superintendents and external partners.
    • Advise and support leadership development coaches and other leader mentors.
    • Support and advise professional development as part of a career lattice, as appropriate, to align the work across the City.
    • Work with unions to ensure ongoing support for leadership.
    • Provide support and guidance to Superintendents that will enable them to optimize the performance and contributions of district team members.

     

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

     

    MINIMUM

     

    Must currently possess a New York State Certification as a School District Administrator (SDA) or School District Leader (SDL).  PLEASE NOTE: WE DO NOT ACCEPT INTERNSHIP CERTIFICATES.

     

     

    Plus

     

    • 3+ years effective superintendent experience.
    • 10 years effective pedagogical experience.
    • Certified Coaching experience in leadership development.
    • Knowledge and use of adult learning theories (andragogy, experiential learning and transformational learning).
    • Demonstrated successful sustained leadership experience as a principal and superintendent in improving student outcomes.
    • Demonstrated successful experience with team building and development.
    • Demonstrated successful experience with communication and collaboration that improves student learning.
    • Demonstrated participation in a variety of supervisory professional learning programs on leadership development, instructional leadership, school improvement, and educational reform.
    • Demonstrated improved student outcomes through work with teachers, parents, school leaders, and principal supervisors.
    • Deep knowledge and experience of leadership development and educational reform.
    • Demonstrated successful experience with parent engagement.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of DOE policies and governance procedures.
    • Knowledge of new, innovative practices that lead to effective and sustainable leadership.
    • Working knowledge of, and effective use of various data and systems.

     

    SALARY: $125,256+
