    Position Details

    Stewards Individual Placement Program (STE) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

    As part of the National Park Service, Weir Farm National Historical Park’s mission is to preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. Specifically, to preserve and provide opportunities for visitors to preserve a significant site of the tradition of American Impressionism; maintain the integrity of a setting that inspired artistic expression and to offer opportunities for the inspirational benefit and education of the American people.

    STE in partnership with National Park Service at Weir Farm National Historical Park is looking for individuals to serve as Stewardship Interns. The internships will provide a variety of experiences in visitor service, interpretation, education, community engagement, natural and cultural resource management. The intern will work with the visitor services division to lead public programs and guided tours, staff the visitor center and historic buildings, provide information and interpretation to visitors from around the world, complete projects to engage diverse audiences and virtual visitors, increase their understanding of natural & cultural resources, and complete research and behind-the-scenes projects that contribute to parkwide goals.

    Position Responsibilities will include:

    • Lead interpretative and education programs and provide informal interpretation to park visitors. Learn the parks’ operations, rove to engage on-site, lead activities for education programs, group visits and special events. Interns will also develop, plan, and present their interpretation materials.

    - Training will include an Interpretation 101 course and shadowing/mentoring from supervisor and experienced staff. Interns will also have access to trends and theory of interpretation resources.

    • Community Outreach. Make contacts at community events. Develop special product and/or program to engage the community. Reach out to community partners to engage them in service learning or volunteerism at the park. Interns will be expected to contribute to social media and website content.

    - Interns will be provided with outreach and social media plans for the park and will receive hand on trainings and mentoring from supervisor and staff.

    • Develop an understanding of NPS operations and careers. Interns will learn basic structure, organization, and the mission of the National Park Service. Individuals will develop resumes; gain understanding navigating USA Jobs to search and apply for jobs.

    - Weir Farm National Historical Park will lead sessions on resume writing, how to use USA Jobs, and provided information career talks. Intern will explore NPS resources and learn about NPS careers through working with all divisions.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Experience working with the public, some college (bachelor’s degree preferred but not required)
    • Applicants must demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal, computer, research, writing, and organizational skills.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • The ability to work with a team and coordinate activities with other team members.
    • Experience leading groups and supervising volunteers
    • Customer/visitor service experience
    • Experience working in an outdoor park setting.

    Benefits:

    Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $3,447.50.

    Intern will receive a weekly stipend that will total to $630. This total will be distributed as the following:

    · Living Allowance: $430/week (pre-tax)

    · Housing Allowance: $200 (No On-site housing)
