  • Responsibilities

    The New York Genome Center (“NYGC”) is looking for a software engineer to provide technical expertise with Cloud Migrations/Cloud-Native Service architectures and integration of third-party solutions.  As an engineer at NYGC, you will be responsible for writing software that follows industry best practices.  In a teamwork environment, you will write extensible, unit-tested software that adheres to DRY (“don’t repeat yourself”) computer programming principles. Senior Software Engineers are primary contributors, driving our application platform forward: a strong individual and team contributor, who is familiar with breaking down tasks into work plans, and then driving those plans through design, implementation, testing, and deployment.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO):

    • Build decoupled systems, utilizing RESTful web APIs
    • Engineer automation-first solutions for complex problems and workflows
    • Implement features using modern coding standards in Python 3
    • Write regression test suites that verify features meet their software specification
    • Migrate on-premise applications to the cloud (GCP and/or AWS)
    • Assist with managing product backlog, requirements gathering, document specifications, and software validations
    • Provide effective code reviews in both the host and reviewer roles
    • Provide stakeholders and team members with technical guidance in your areas of expertise

    Required Skills

    • BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field
    • 6+ years related experience; or master’s degree plus 4+ years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Comfortable learning a new domain in a short amount of time
    • Successful both as a self-sustaining contributor and as technical lead for small to mid-sized projects
    • Excellent skills in programming extensible object-oriented software solutions using Python 3
    • Professional work experience with more than one programming language
    • Experience with major cloud providers including GCP and/or AWS
    • Experience developing middleware solutions that integrate with a high number of both internal and external systems
    • Experience with RESTful web APIs, containerization, load balancing, instance groups, cloud functions/triggers/messaging
    • Experience with SDLC best practices, including source control management, coding standards, testing, code reviews, build processes, and software maintenance operations
    • Functional familiarity with open source RDBMS like PostgreSQL and data warehousing solution providers like BigQuery
    • Excellent listening, written, and verbal communication skills
    • Experience mentoring software engineers

     

    PREFERRED SKILLS

    • Experience with developing FDA and/or HIPAA compliant software

    WORK FLEXIBILITY

    NYGC has established a flexible work policy to give employees and other staff more ability to balance their work, personal commitments, and commuting challenges. The incumbent in this position is eligible for a flexible work schedule or remote (eastern standard schedule only) work arrangement with supervisory approval.

     

    ABOUT THE NEW YORK GENOME CENTER

    The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is an independent, nonprofit, academic research organization dedicated to advancing genomic research. NYGC scientists and staff are furthering new approaches to diagnosing and treating neurological diseases and cancer through their unique capabilities in whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, state-of-the art analytics, and the development of genomic tools. NYGC concentrates specifically on disease-based research in the following areas: neuropsychiatric disease (autism, schizophrenia, bipolar); neurodegenerative disease (ALS, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s), and cancer.

     

    Located in Lower Manhattan, the New York Genome Center was founded by and remains closely affiliated with the leading academic medical centers and research universities in the New York region, engaging in research projects with and for these institutions. Essential to our collaborative work is an outstanding faculty, whose members typically hold a joint appointment at NYGC and a partner university. They support our scientific mission by conducting independent research in areas of mutual interest to us and the wider scientific community.
