    We are currently seeking a SALES TAX MANAGER to work in our Waltham, MA office.

     

    As a key member of the Department of Tax and Regulatory, the Sales Tax Manager manages various aspects of tax compliance with a focus on US sales & use tax. The Sales Tax Manager will have primary responsibility for domestic sales tax issues with emphasis on sales tax determination, reconciliation of sales tax accounts and reporting sales tax information to multistate taxing jurisdictions.  

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Work independently to manage the full cycle of sales tax reporting. Prepare and reconcile state and local sales tax returns in relevant jurisdictions using OneSource reporting software.  Process, file and remit these tax returns prior to statutory deadlines.
    • Collaborate with other MMS teams to apply correct multistate sales tax determination protocols to MMS transactions in consideration of taxable and exempt products and transactions. Reconcile sales and sales tax general ledger accounts in the Workday general ledger system.
    • Manage the exemption certificate process. This involves communication with various MMS departments and customers to collect exemption certificates and manage a certificate database using OneSource Indirect Tax software.
    • Research sales tax laws related to MMS initiatives and products, recommend appropriate action and clearly communicate the action to stakeholders. Resolve notices from state and local tax jurisdictions. Manage sales tax audits. Assist in filing business licenses and other miscellaneous regulatory reports where appropriate.
    • Work with the business units to understand their respective issues and develop solutions that balance the operational needs of the Society with regulatory compliance requirements.
    • Regularly assist and contribute to IT team troubleshooting efforts related to the sales and use tax determination and reporting process.
    • Assist with international indirect tax compliance, including VAT and GST/HST, as needed.
    • Provide accounting and reporting for other MMS initiatives including Grant Accounts by preparing monthly journal entries and reports to the grant administrator as required under the conditions of the grant.
    • As needed, prepare or assist with Forms 990, 990-EZ, 990N, 990-T, and related state returns (or sections thereof) for the Massachusetts Medical Society or its related organizations. Prior experience with these forms is not necessary.
    • Provide other Tax team members with assistance and back-up support, as needed.
    • Additional responsibilities as assigned

    Required Skills Required Experience

    • A Bachelors’ degree or equivalent in accounting or similar field is required.
    • 6- 7 or more years of accounting or related experience, preferably with 2 - 3 years focused on indirect tax matters.
    • Proficiency with MS Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Word) is required.
    • Experience and proficiency with OneSource (Thomson Reuters Indirect Tax), CCH ProSystem fx Tax (Wolters Kluwer) or similar software is preferred.
    • Detailed knowledge of and experience with multistate sales tax strongly preferred.
    • Experience with GAAP accounting and preparing financial statements is helpful.
    • CPA a plus but not required.
    • Advanced analytical skills including the ability to manage a significant amount of data under strict time constraints.
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organization skills, and attention to detail are  required components of the successful candidate’s skillset.
