The Coetzee Laboratory, at the Van Andel Institute, is currently seeking to hire a POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW to join the lab.

Under the direction of Gerry Coetzee, Ph.D., the lab uses genomics methods to explore brain left/right asymmetry in Parkinson’s Disease (PD).

    Background reading:

The enigma and implications of brain hemispheric asymmetry in neurodegenerative diseases. Lubben N, Ensink E, Coetzee GA, Labrie V.Brain Commun. 2021 Sep 6;3(3):fcab211. doi: 10.1093/braincomms/fcab211. eCollection 2021.

    PMID: 34557668

This Postdoctoral Fellow will investigate chromatin function, including at non-coding regions involved in PD.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • A Ph.D. graduate with experience and publications in the fields of neuroscience, MOLECULAR BIOLOGY, GENETICS OR EPIGENETICS AND BIOINFORMATICS.
    • Must provide the names of three individuals who can provide recommendations and present a scientific seminar describing his or her previous research.

Specifically, we are interested in candidates with a background in molecular biology and human genetics AS WELL AS BIOINFORMATICS SKILLS FOR THE ANALYSES OF LARGE DATA SETS; PROGRAMMING SKILLS IN R AND PYTHON WILL BE CONSIDERED A PLUS.

Dr. Coetzee’s lab is part of the Department of Neurodegenerative Science, which focuses on elucidating disease mechanisms and identifying novel disease-modifying therapeutic approaches for major neurodegenerative diseases, with a special focus on PD. Additional areas of interest include dementias (Alzheimer’s disease, dementia with Lewy bodies) and psychiatric disorders (depression, anxiety). Department faculty have research interests and expertise in the molecular underpinnings of neurodegenerative disease through an understanding of genetic risk, epigenetics, cell biology, biomarkers, neuropathology, neuroinflammation, neural circuits and patient-derived biospecimens.

Van Andel Institute (VAI) provides postdoctoral training opportunities to scientists beginning their research careers. The fellowships are to help promising scientists advance their knowledge and research experience and at the same time support the research endeavors of VAI under the mentorship of a VAI Faculty member.

While this project is currently funded, an integral part of postdoctoral training is the process of preparing a research proposal and writing a fellowship application. All VAI Postdoctoral Fellows are encouraged to apply for external funding as soon as it is practical and reasonable after hire. Receiving a fellowship award provides recognition for both the fellow and VAI!
