    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Chief Financial Officer will oversee all facets of the firm's financial functions. This is a senior administrative position that will report to the Chair of the Executive Committee, working closely with the firm's Financial Partner.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Direct and maintain responsibility for the financial function of the firm, acting as the firm's strategic business advisor/trusted advisor in all things financial as well as its business operations • Present monthly reports at the firm's Executive Committee meetings, as well as updates to the firm's partners. Present on the firm's financial affairs at periodic “in person” partner/all attorney meetings • Maintain the integrity of the firm's financial practices, ensuring compliance with financial standards, financial institution requests, audits, and government agencies • Responsible for the evaluation, implementation, and effectiveness of internal financial controls • Assist in the implementation of the firm's strategic plan, providing support and input to the Executive Committee and Office Heads • Oversee and participate in handling cash management, banking relationships, budgeting, forecasting, billing, collections, vendor payments, internal and external audits, and auditing relationships • Lead and manage the Accounting staff, including a Controller, an Assistant Controller, the Billing and Collections Manager, the Accounts Receivable Department, the Accounts Payable Department and the Billing/ Collections Department • Optimize the performance of the Accounting department, ensuring accurate handling of daily transactions while continuing to provide excellent customer service. Hire, train, evaluate, support, and develop Accounting staff as needed • Perform timely and complex financial analyses in order to provide input on the Firm's business transactions and strategic planning initiatives. Requires creating profitability and cost-benefit analysis reports as well as evaluating possible merger or acquisitions • Perform due diligence on all lateral partner candidates, including interviewing, submitting reviews/evaluations, recommending “go/no go” on lateral hiring through offer letter design and negotiation/completion. Then perform after-the-fact ongoing evaluations on performance to meet offer letter expectations • Maintain and negotiate financial arrangements/terms with all recruiters that seek to identify attorney/lateral partner candidates for firm consideration • Prepare and distribute monthly partnership financial reports, including a summary analysis and explanations of significant variances. Evaluate effectiveness of the report package and recommend changes as needed. Provide direction to partners to further their understanding of the data and its interpretation • Monitor trends within the legal industry and the firm; devise and implement strategies to deal with economic downturns and challenges to the firm's financial well-being. Provide input, recommendations, and direction upon request • Maintain partnership capital accounts, including the periodic re-allocation of capital balances due to partnership additions, withdrawals, and slotting changes • Identify/evaluate software solutions that provide cost effective ways to improve financial reports/analysis/day-to-day operations of the financial/accounting department • Promptly respond to the daily requests for guidance/analysis/reports and assistance in all areas financial, both business and personal, as needed, to the partners, as well as requests for other departments/attorneys/& staff • Participate in ad hoc and ongoing administrative committees as assigned

    SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in accounting, finance, or in a relevant discipline, or a CPA or MBA in combination with relevant experience • Experience working with, and a thorough understanding of, billing/accounting system software such as Elite Enterprise, financial statement software such as FRx, report writer/profitability tools such as Business Objects, and analytical tools such as Excel • Ability to take assignments from inception to completion with little outside assistance • Comfortable/proficient making presentations to groups of attorneys, both large and small • Ability to work well, individually and in teams, with a diverse group of people • Ability to be comfortable with, and initiate, change and process improvement • Excellent oral and written communication skills • Strong work ethic and “can do” attitude • Meticulous attention to detail • Strong leadership and management skills

    QUALITIES IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE:

    • Seasoned, relevant experience providing day-to-day general business as well as financial guidance/advice to C-level personnel in a law firm or professional services firm/company • Experience working for a professional services firm, preferably with multiple partners/shareholders in an organization with multiple levels of authority • Strong technical accounting knowledge, including an understanding of accepted financial standards, tax requirements of governmental agencies, and general auditing procedures • Must be able to provide clear, precise, and well-substantiated explanations of financial events and trends to a non-financially-astute audience • Comfort and skill in using a hands-on approach in situations where tasks and analyses cannot be delegated
