Construction Divisional Operations Accounting Manager
Luxury Residential Construction | Multi-Site Operations
Job Summary
Buildlabs Custom Homes LLC is seeking an experienced and highly hands-on Construction Divisional Operations Accounting Manager to oversee and actively perform all accounting office transactions for a luxury residential construction company with multiple active project sites.
This is a working manager role. In addition to supervising accounting operations and staff, this individual will be responsible for executing day-to-day accounting functions, auditing existing financial processes, and making recommendations to ensure the most accurate, efficient, and scalable accounting practices across the organization.
Responsibilities
Hands-On Accounting & Financial Execution
Perform and oversee daily accounting transactions across multiple construction projects, divisions and Buildlabs locations
Manage general ledger activity, job cost accounting, cost coding, and project-level financial tracking
Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules
Execute month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes
Maintain strong internal controls through direct involvement in accounting operations
Construction & Job Cost Accounting
Perform and oversee job cost accounting, including budget tracking, cost-to-complete analysis, variance analysis, and forecasting
Review project costs, change orders, purchase orders, subcontractor billing, retainage, and draw schedules
Prepare and manage WIP (Work in Progress) schedules and revenue recognition
Partner with project managers to ensure accurate cost allocation and financial transparency
Auditing, Controls & Process Improvement
Audit existing accounting workflows, job cost processes, and financial controls
Identify gaps, redundancies, and risk areas impacting accuracy and efficiency
Recommend and implement improved accounting procedures and controls
Ensure consistency and data integrity across all accounting systems
Leadership & Supervision
Supervise, mentor, and support accounting staff while remaining actively involved in daily work
Establish workflows, deadlines, and accountability standards
Lead by example in both transactional and review-based accounting responsibilities
Reporting & Executive Support
Prepare and present financial reports for Buildlabs executive leadership
Support budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning initiatives
Serve as a financial resource for operational decision-making
Coordinate with external auditors, tax professionals, and financial institutions, vendors and clients
Requirements and Qualifications
Education & Credentials
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (required)
CPA license or MBA degree (required)
Continuing professional education (CPE) in accounting, finance, or construction-related disciplines preferred
Construction Accounting Experience
Minimum 10 years of progressive accounting experience within a construction company
Demonstrated expertise in construction-specific accounting, including:
Job cost accounting and cost code structures
Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting and revenue recognition
Budget-to-actual tracking and cost-to-complete analysis
Change order accounting and financial impact analysis
Retainage, lien waivers, and subcontractor billing
Experience supporting multiple concurrent projects across different job sites
Hands-On Accounting & Execution
Proven experience in a working manager or controller role where the individual personally performed accounting tasks in addition to oversight
Ability and willingness to:
Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, and adjusting entries
Manage general ledger accuracy and integrity
Execute month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closes
Review and process AP/AR, payroll coordination, and job cost entries
Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify discrepancies and resolve issues independently
Auditing, Controls & Process Improvement
Demonstrated experience auditing internal accounting processes and workflows
Ability to evaluate financial controls for accuracy, efficiency, and risk exposure
Proven track record of:
Identifying process gaps, redundancies, and inefficiencies
Recommending improved procedures and control frameworks
Implementing scalable, repeatable accounting processes in growing organizations
Experience preparing for or supporting internal and external audits
Leadership & Management
Prior experience supervising, mentoring, or managing accounting staff
Ability to set clear expectations, workflows, and deadlines while remaining actively involved in execution
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively across accounting, operations, and project teams
Comfortable holding team members accountable while maintaining a professional, respectful work environment
Systems & Technical Skills
Advanced proficiency with construction accounting and ERP systems
Strong Excel skills, including complex formulas, reconciliations, and financial analysis
Ability to evaluate accounting systems and recommend improvements or optimizations
Experience maintaining data accuracy across multiple platforms and reporting outputs
Business & Communication Skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders
Ability to translate financial data into actionable operational insights
Professional judgment and discretion when handling sensitive financial information
Highly organized, deadline-driven, and able to manage competing priorities
Work Environment & Commitment
Ability to work in person, full-time, five days per week at one of our Buildlabs office locations
