  • Responsibilities

    Core responsibilities

    • Oversee field construction for highways, interchanges, bridges, drainage, earthworks, and pavements, ensuring work meets plans, specifications, and safety standards while managing contractors and crews daily.
    • Plan and supervise construction phases, prepare and review method statements, traffic control plans, risk assessments, and progress reports, and enforce health and safety on site.
    • Control schedule and budget, estimate quantities and costs, and track production and earned value to keep delivery within contract time and costs.

    Typical duties on site

    • Conduct site inspections, materials sampling, density/compaction checks, concrete/asphalt acceptance, and document test results for pay items and quality assurance.
    • Coordinate utilities, staging, detours, and night work; maintain winter operations and public access when required; resolve constructability issues with designers.
    • Prepare daily reports, RFIs, submittal reviews, change order support, and stakeholder communications with clients, DOT inspectors, and the public.

    Skills and tools

    • Technical: reading plans/specs, DOT standards, AASHTO materials and pavement concepts, surveying fundamentals, drainage and earthwork, and construction methods; proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D/MicroStation and project controls (Primavera/MS Project).
    • Analysis: traffic staging and modeling, geotechnical and hydraulics basics for coordination, BIM/GIS for coordination and quantity takeoffs where adopted.
    • Soft skills: communication, coordination, problem solving, and rigorous attention to safety and quality in multidisciplinary team settings.

    Education and credentials

    • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (preferably ABET-accredited) for engineering roles; construction management degrees common for field leadership; PE typically required for stamping/lead roles.
    • Certifications: NICET Highway Construction Inspection (Levels I–IV) for inspectors/technicians; additional training via university heavy-highway certificates and DOT qualification programs is valued.

    •Professional Attitude & conduct

    •Multi-task, interpersonal communication, problem solving, and time management skills are needed.

    •High degree of safety awareness and safety discipline

    •Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors and the general public at all times.

    •Willing to travel and work away from home when and if required.

    •Be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.

    •Strictly adhere to safety requirements and the policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.

    •Have the willingness to work in a team environment and assist co–workers or supervisors with other duties as required.

    •Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by Pittman Construction Safety and OSHA.

    •Be at least age 18 years of age due to nature of working environment.

    •You will be expected to be flexible to the needs of our business, as we continually strive to meet and exceed the needs of our customers.

    •Random and Suspicion Drug tests are performed
