Construction Manager - Transportation Projects
Location: Mt. Carmel, Illinois
Lead construction in the field. Protect quality, schedule, and compliance.
An established employee-owned engineering firm is seeking a Phase III Construction Manager to support and lead construction engineering services across municipal, county, IDOT, and Illinois Tollway projects. This role serves as a Resident Engineer and field leader, overseeing construction activities, documentation, quality control, and coordination across transportation and public infrastructure work.
This is a strong fit for a construction professional who knows how to manage the jobsite, communicate with contractors and public stakeholders, and keep projects moving in line with plans, specifications, and agency requirements.
What You’ll Be Doing
Resident Engineering & Construction Oversight
- Serve as Resident Engineer on Phase III transportation and infrastructure projects
- Oversee field construction activities for municipal, county, IDOT, and Illinois Tollway work
- Lead weekly construction meetings and maintain alignment across contractors, clients, and stakeholders
- Identify schedule, budget, sequencing, or constructability issues early and help drive resolution
- Attend preconstruction meetings and support field coordination throughout the life of the project
Project Administration & Documentation
- Prepare and manage pay estimates, change orders, daily documentation, and project records
- Maintain documentation in accordance with IDOT standards and client requirements
- Review construction calculations and provide technical support to other Resident Engineers as needed
- Review design plans during preconstruction or design phases to identify constructability concerns
Materials Testing & Quality Assurance
- Manage Phase III staff and oversee construction inspection and testing activities
- Oversee or perform materials testing for soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt
- Perform field and lab testing including density, gradation, permeability, moisture, and concrete testing
- Calibrate testing equipment in compliance with IDOT and AASHTO standards
- Support and manage lab certifications for aggregate, concrete, and soils testing operations
Field Verification & Technical Support
- Use survey equipment to verify contractor grades and alignment in the field
- Provide hands-on technical support during active construction
- Assist with transportation design-related work during slower winter periods as workload allows
What You Bring
Education & Licensure
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- Illinois Professional Engineer (PE) license required
Experience & Technical Background
- Strong working knowledge of IDOT Standard Specifications, Construction Manual, and Project Procedures Guide
- Experience with construction inspection, field oversight, materials testing, and QA/QC
- Familiarity with water main and sanitary/sewer construction specifications
- Experience on IDOT and/or Illinois Tollway projects strongly preferred
Certifications
Preferred, or willingness to obtain:
- IDOT documentation, CMMS, and QMP certifications
- IDOT materials testing certifications in PCC, HMA, Aggregate, and Soils
- Erosion control certifications (Classes I–III)
- MSHA training
Skills
- Strong problem-solving ability and sound field judgment
- Able to work independently and lead effectively in an active construction environment
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation preferred
- Valid driver’s license with a strong driving record
Physical & Field Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying and extreme weather conditions
- Ability to walk jobsites and navigate uneven terrain safely
- Ability to stand, crouch, bend, and move throughout active field environments
- Ability to lift and carry at least 30 pounds
- Frequent use of hands, arms, and fingers for field and testing tasks
