  • Responsibilities

    MAIN FUNCTION:

    Has responsibility for the engineering design of multiple areas or processes on a project.  Reports to the Director of Engineering.  Coordinates all design engineering disciplines for a particular work area.  May be placed in responsible charge of medium to large projects. Responsible for engineering support tracking cost, scope of work and schedule.  On larger projects, may be responsible for the work of one or more CCC or outside Engineers or Project Leads.

     DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    §  Perform various engineering duties requiring the exercise of judgment and application of standard engineering principles and practices. Pursue initiatives to improve effectiveness of the group and increase customer satisfaction.

    §  Perform various engineering calculations and tasks involving such functions as analysis, design, development, test, installation and service, while working from instructions, drawings, proposals, specifications, and other pertinent information. 

    §  Prepare specifications, engineering drawings and related documents in accordance with requirements, established formats and general instructions. Review and analyze a variety of engineering data, documents and reports.

    §  Consult with other engineering groups to ensure that specified engineering criteria are suitable for the proposed application, and recommend revisions, as appropriate.

    §  Plan, conduct or coordinate engineering analyses and tests, and prepare related reports and summaries, for review.

    §  Participate in the investigation of technical problems and the establishment of procedures and corrective actions to avoid recurrences. 

    §  Establish formal policies or guidelines on technology and process investment programs, including purpose, scope, budget and resource allocation, etc.

    §  Makes presentations to engineering department, senior management and company stakeholders as appropriate.

    §  Spearheads creative development and implementation of “break-through” projects such as energy recovery and specialty products.

    §  Works with Operations, Marketing, Engineering, and Finance to ensure that product and quality meets and exceeds internal and external customer requirements.

    §  Work to minimize project risks to avoid incurring penalties, warranty repairs or other charges that may have substantial financial impact. 

    §  Interfaces with and coordinates selection of outside technical resources (vendors, consultants, universities, etc.) as needed to facilitate technical projects’ success.

    §  Participates in customer technical and quality reviews.  Coordinates with Technical Service and advises marketing and/or manufacturing, as necessary, regarding customer requirements.

    §  Proactively seeks, identifies, evaluates, documents, and presents worthy projects to executive management for consideration of implementation.

    §  Supports technology license maintenance and development activities globally.

    §  Approves all new or revised drawings, standards, and specifications.

    §  Ensures accuracy of discipline audits, and reviews deviations.

    §  Approves all inquiries and requisitions for engineered/tagged equipment and instruments related to the project.

    §  Initiates project change orders any time changes to scope affect the budget or schedule.

    §  Provides leadership in training, development, and selection of process improvement initiatives, including Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, ISO certification, and related areas.

    §  Provide technical direction and review decisions of staff performing lower level work.

    §  Promotes good work habits and attitudes within the various disciplines. 

    §  Follow all Safety and Integrity requirements and principles.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    §  Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or other technical discipline.  MS or MBA highly recommended.  Requires a minimum of six (6) - ten (10) years total experience, six (6) years of demonstrated success in Carbon Black or related industry in an engineering support role, and four (4) years as a Project Engineer or Project Lead.

    §  High proficiency in computer and computer systems (technical and business) mandatory.

    §  Must be a self-starter and highly motivated. 

    LANGUAGE SKILLS:

    Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and standards, and governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of clients, managers, designers, and engineers. 

     MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry, differential equations and advanced engineering calculations.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

     PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Occasionally, will conduct or participate in field trips to existing plants.  This requires the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb and balance.  Lifting of 25 pounds may be required. It also requires clear close and distance vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:     

    Normal work environment will be a business office with moderate noise.  Occasionally, will conduct or participate in field trips to existing plants.  This may require exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, working near moving mechanical parts, vibration, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals and airborne particles.
