Position Overview
Global Language System (GLS) is expanding our network of independent contractor interpreters in the Raleigh, NC area to support Over-the-Phone Interpretation (OPI), Video Remote Interpretation (VRI), and on-site interpreting. This role is ideal for professional linguists who want flexible assignments while supporting community, healthcare, government, and business clients.
Key Responsibilities
Provide accurate interpretation between English and your target language via:
OPI (phone)
VRI (video)
On-site (consecutive; simultaneous/whisper as qualified and requested)
Follow interpreter ethics: accuracy, completeness, neutrality, confidentiality
Confirm assignments promptly and arrive on time for on-site appointments
Maintain required documentation (service logs, timesheets, encounter details as required)
Use professional communication with clients, LEP individuals, and GLS staff
Comply with client rules and privacy requirements (HIPAA where applicable)
Required Qualifications
Fluency in English and at least one additional language
Prior interpreting experience (community, medical, legal, education, or government preferred)
Professionalism, strong attendance, and dependable responsiveness
Ability to pass required screening and onboarding (ID verification, background check if required)
For on-site assignments: ability to travel locally in/around Raleigh; reliable transportation
Preferred Qualifications (Not Required)
40-hour interpreter training (or equivalent)
National/state credentials or certifications (where applicable)
Medical/legal interpreting experience
Experience using interpreting platforms and call handling protocols
Technical Requirements (for OPI/VRI)
Stable high-speed internet
Quiet, private workspace suitable for confidential calls
Computer/smartphone capable of running video platforms; headset recommended
Contractor Details (1099)
Contractors maintain their own equipment, workspace, and tax obligations
Paid per assignment and/or per minute/hour depending on modality and client
Opportunities for recurring clients and steady volume based on availability and performance
