Head of Marketing

Contrarian Thinking

Head of Marketing

austin, TX
Full Time
Paid
  • Responsibilities

I remember what it was like starting my marketing career 15 years ago and hating it.

I didn't get into marketing to build brands that would never make any impact on the world.

I didn't get into marketing to mindlessly click around in ad managers to optimize CPCs.

I didn't get into marketing just to follow the rules and hear, “Well, that's just how we do things.”

So, if you are experiencing any of that right now in your job and want that to change, keep reading.

You're more capable than what you're currently doing. You're ambitious. You want to build and create but lack the sandbox.

We're that sandbox. So, if you're interested in doing things differently, consider joining our Crew at Contrarian Thinking.

-Chris Piper, COO (previously our CMO)

If we have your attention and this sounds like your dream role, read on, because this is unlike any other Head of Marketing role out there.

To begin with, you're coming into a fast-growing 8-figure company, with an established brand, a passionate fanbase, a community, and a core team that is set on changing the landscape of small businesses and communities across America.

In the SMB acquisitions space, there is no better brand than Contrarian Thinking--we have a massive reach (over 5m+ followers and 500k+ newsletter subscribers)--and we are consistently growing our revenue from a process that is dialed in and highly analytical.

All that being said: we still have a ton of room to grow and get better.

We've only really tapped a few marketing channels and are in a great position to thoughtfully expand and scale.

We have a great brand, but we're still relatively unknown in the world.

And quite frankly, we do a poor job telling our own story: we've done so many amazing things (like the $238m+ of revenue our community has acquired), and we hardly talk about any of them. We're so busy working hard to serve our community members, we don't stop to brag enough--we're the proverbial cobbler whose kids have holes in their shoes.

The perfect Head of Marketing for us is someone who has a wide range of skills, but ideally is first and foremost two things:

    1. A great storyteller, looking for the perfect canvas on which to express their skills, and

    2. A modern marketing savant who understands the full spectrum of marketing activity that goes into scaling a company in the media and education (info product) space.

I know–storytelling and info products don't typically go hand-in-hand. But we wouldn't be called Contrarian Thinking if we didn't do a few things against the grain.

We have an incredible foundation upon which that person can stand and work their magic: a great team who knows how to do their jobs, a dialed-in analytics and tracking system (HubSpot, Hyros, full centralized modern data stack), a fantastic foundation of content already produced and converting, a well-designed and established brand, and possibly the best part:

The old CMO is staying to help!

Chris Piper, the man who helped develop the current brand and marketing process (who also wrote this very compelling career description), is moving up in the company. His primary skill set is not a storytelling marketer, so he is happy to help the incoming Head of Marketing understand how everything currently works as much as necessary and support with the transition.

Now, to be clear this is a Head-level position (our highest level besides CEO/COO). If you are only a great marketer, and have never led teams, then this is the wrong role for you. This role requires someone with both skill sets.

If you can nail that, you're probably pretty awesome, which brings us to an important question:

    You in?

Great. Before you apply, take a minute to learn a bit more about what you'd be marketing:

Who is Contrarian Thinking and what do we do?

We free minds and build bank accounts. We're on a mission to help 1 million people become financially free and to create 100,000 small business owners.

We're a digital education and media startup that has amassed 5+ million followers in less than 3 years–and we're just getting started.

Our weekly newsletter is read by over 500,000 subscribers, which you can read here.

We also produce some of the best content in the finance niche on our YouTube channel (and Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and TikTok).

99% of our content is 100% free.

The other 1% is how we help people become expert deal makers so they can acquire a “boring business” that cashflow.

We do this through our self-directed video course (the Small Biz Buying course), or for people who also want our expert guidance and accountability, we offer our premier mastermind (the Contrarian Community).

Through those two programs, our members have acquired over $238,000,000 in revenue.

We also have our investment fund, Contrarian Thinking Capital, which invests in the businesses and tech that support SMB growth.

Our holding company has over 20 companies in it, including local Austin restaurants, car washes, solar, and military and defense companies.

So, yeah, you could say we put our money where our mouths are. :)

For more information about our Founder, Codie Sanchez, read her bio or watch her origin story.

    **
    Why our work matters**

With 10,000 Baby Boomers retiring daily, and 19% of them owning a small business…

That's nearly 2,000 businesses a DAY that need a succession plan.

And since many Millennials are focused on becoming YouTube stars, and not wanting to own their parent's landscaping company (even if it's making millions)...these Boomers are forced to either close or sell their business.

    Therein lies our opportunity.

We call them “Boring Businesses”. They are your local laundromats, car washes, pool cleaning routes, handyman services, etc.–the unsexy blue-collar businesses that no one thinks about but everyone needs. And boy are they profitable.

But it's not all about the benjamins.

We believe our communities are a better place when our actual neighbor owns the Neighborhood Store and not a conglomerate.

We believe in Main Street over Wall Street.

We believe in thinking critically and cash flowing unconventionally.

We believe in doing it our way.
