Role Purpose
Own the financial integrity of a fast-growing, high-volume homebuilding operation. Deliver a clean, fast close; trusted job-level profitability; strong controls; and decision-grade reporting that enables leadership to scale communities, manage cash and lines, and protect margin—without surprises.
What “Great” Looks Like
A repeatable close that doesn’t rely on heroics
Job costs and margins construction leaders trust
Early detection of margin leakage (PO discipline, change orders, trade credits, warranty accruals, spec aging)
Confident handling of multi-entity complexity (intercompany, allocations, debt covenants)
Controls that speed the business instead of slowing it down
Core Responsibilities
Close, Consolidation & Financial Reporting
Own monthly close across all entities (GL, job cost, inventory, fixed assets, debt, intercompany, payroll, accruals)
Deliver accurate entity-level and consolidated financials (IS, BS, CF) with variance analysis
Maintain GAAP-consistent chart of accounts and reporting structure
Oversee draw packages, lender reporting support, and bank reconciliations
Ensure 1099 compliance and vendor master integrity
Job Costing & Margin Integrity
Own job cost structure: budgets, commitments, change orders, cost-to-complete, and variance logic
Maintain tight linkage between POs, invoices, WIP, inventory, and margin
Enforce disciplined accounting for lot/house costs, specs, interest capitalization, and warranty accruals
Partner with Operations on accurate starts, completions, and closings
Inventory, Land & Capitalization
Oversee land acquisition, development, and vertical construction accounting
Maintain lot cost rollups, indirect cost allocations, and interest capitalization schedules
Track spec inventory aging, impairment indicators, and model home capitalization/depreciation
Cash, Forecasting & Executive Reporting
Manage cash forecasting, funding needs, payables cadence, and payroll timing
Drive annual budgets and rolling forecasts by entity and community
Deliver dashboards on closings vs. plan, margins, incentives, spec aging, warranty trends, and SG&A
Provide insight into the why, not just the what
Controls, Audit Readiness & Risk Management
Design and enforce scalable internal controls (approvals, segregation of duties, PO-to-pay)
Lead CPA relationships for year-end and reviews (as applicable)
Maintain clear accounting policies and documentation
Team Leadership & Systems Ownership
Lead, coach, and develop the accounting team with clear roles and standards
Own close calendars, checklists, KPIs, and backup coverage
Improve systems, workflows, and automation (AP, JEs, BI reporting)
Partner cross-functionally with Ops, Purchasing, Sales, and Land
Required Experience
8–12+ years progressive accounting/finance experience; Controller-level ownership required
Homebuilding or construction accounting experience required (production volume strongly preferred)
Multi-entity consolidations, intercompany, and allocations required
Proven success delivering a fast, clean close (≤7 business days; 5-day target preferred)
Advanced Excel required; BI experience a plus
