Position Summary
The Controller will oversee all accounting and financial operations for a family-owned transportation company with a long-standing reputation for service excellence. This role is a hands-on financial leader who partners closely with ownership and operations to ensure strong financial controls, accurate reporting, and sustainable growth.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee all accounting functions including general ledger, AP, AR, payroll, fixed assets, and revenue recognition
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes
- Develop financial reports, KPIs, and variance analyses for ownership
- Coordinate with external CPAs on tax filings, reviews, and audits
Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis
- Lead annual budgeting and rolling forecast processes
- Analyze profitability by service type, customer, contract, vehicle, and route
- Provide clear, practical financial insights to ownership to support decision-making
- Monitor and report on labor, fuel, insurance, maintenance, and overhead costs
Cash Flow, Controls & Risk Management
- Manage cash flow forecasting, banking relationships, and working capital
- Establish and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures
- Oversee billing, collections, and credit processes
- Ensure compliance with financial, insurance, and regulatory requirements
Fleet & Operational Finance
- Oversee accounting for fleet assets, including capitalization, depreciation, leases, and disposals
- Partner with operations on fleet purchases, replacements, and cost analysis
- Track and analyze fleet-related expenses (maintenance, fuel, insurance)
- Support pricing decisions, contract reviews, and RFP financial modeling
Leadership & Systems
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team
- Improve accounting processes and systems, including integrations with dispatch, payroll, and operational platforms
- Work collaboratively with Operations, HR, Dispatch, and Sales
- Support growth initiatives, system upgrades, and potential acquisitions
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including Controller-level responsibility
- Strong GAAP knowledge and financial reporting experience
- Experience in service-based, transportation, logistics or similar industries.
- Hands-on experience managing payroll, AR, AP, and multi-entity accounting
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with accounting/ERP systems
Preferred
- CPA or CMA
- Experience in a family-owned or founder-led business
- Familiarity with fleet accounting, leasing, or transportation-related compliance
- Experience helping scale or professionalize finance operations
