This Controller role is built for a hands-on construction accounting leader who wants real ownership—not a narrow slice of finance. You’ll stabilize and improve core processes (especially payroll/job cost), bring order to a disorganized environment left behind, and give the business clear, timely financial visibility.
Our client is a privately held, family-led commercial concrete construction business in the $20M–$30M range. The office team is small and tight-knit, with a straightforward, practical culture and casual business dress.
What you'll do:
- Own day-to-day accounting operations and ensure clean, reliable financials in a construction/job-cost environment (Sage 300 CRE).
- Lead weekly payroll (including coded payroll for job costing) and keep payroll-related compliance moving (tax deposits/filings, union-related items, garnishments, reporting).
- Manage banking and cash visibility: daily review of accounts, cash flow reporting, and monthly bank reconciliations.
- Oversee AP/AR workflow to keep vendor payments, bill coding, customer billing, releases, and collections moving accurately and on time.
- Drive job cost integrity: review hours/dollars posted to jobs, monitor cost vs. billings, and support cost-to-complete and monthly job reviews.
- Handle monthly close activities and management reporting (income statement recap, comparisons, and job cost reporting).
- Supervise and develop one direct report (AP Clerk who also assists with HR) and help bring structure to processes that are currently “messy/disorganized.”
What we're looking for:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Controller-level or senior accounting leadership experience with end-to-end responsibility (payroll, AP/AR, bank recs, month-end).
- Construction accounting understanding (job cost concepts, percent-complete/cost-to-complete reporting, and project billing mechanics).
- Comfortable being hands-on in a smaller office environment—this is not a “delegation-only” seat.
- Ability to step into a situation that needs clean-up and standardization, and calmly build order and repeatability.
What’s In It For You:
- Visible impact: you’ll directly improve payroll/job-cost accuracy and the quality of financial decision-making.
- Stable, onsite team environment with a small, tight-knit office.
- Competitive base range with upside via discretionary bonus depending on company performance.
If you’re a construction accounting Controller who enjoys owning the full finance engine—payroll, job cost, cash, and clean monthly reporting, let's connect.
