Construction Accounting Controller

Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Construction Accounting Controller to serve as a strategic business partner and member of the leadership team. This role will lead the accounting and finance function, implement systems and processes to ensure a high-performing department, and provide financial insight to support both short- and long-term organizational growth.
Strategy, Planning & Management
Act as Controller and strategic financial partner to the leadership team
Evaluate financial performance relative to operational goals, budgets, and forecasts
Provide insight and recommendations for short- and long-term growth plans
Identify, acquire, and implement financial systems and software
Recommend automation and efficiency improvements across departments
Participate in strategic initiatives and operational decision-making
Establish annual financial objectives aligned with growth strategy
Recruit, interview, and hire accounting staff as needed
Implement financial policies, procedures, and controls
Financial Analysis, Budgeting & Forecasting
Prepare and present monthly financial reports (P&L, budget vs. forecast, cash flow)
Prepare and present monthly Work in Progress (WIP) reports
Analyze financial results and provide recommendations
Develop and maintain annual and monthly operating budgets
Supervise budgeting tools, forecasting models, and reporting systems
Prepare financial materials for executive leadership meetings
Accounting, General Ledger & Operations
Supervise and mentor the accounting team
Ensure proper functioning of financial systems and databases
Maintain internal controls and compliance with financial procedures
Ensure accuracy and timeliness of management and financial reporting
Oversee preparation of weekly, monthly, and annual financial statements
Oversee balance sheet reconciliations and supporting documentation
Oversee sales and use tax (SALT) filings
Prepare workpapers for federal and state income tax filings
Lead and improve month-end close process
Review general ledger and overhead cost allocations
Serve as primary contact for external auditors and manage audit preparation
Financial Management
Manage cash flow planning and ensure fund availability
Oversee cash, investments, and asset management
Maintain banking, surety, and financial partner relationships
Utilize financial modeling and activity-based analysis to support planning
Financial Relations & Compliance
Represent the organization to banks, auditors, and financial institutions
Stay current on accounting standards and regulatory requirements
Cash Management
Oversee weekly cash management and Accounts Payable
Approve large payables, checks, ACH, and wire transfers
Supervise Accounts Receivable and support collections
Position Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Economics
CCIFP certification preferred
Membership in CFMA preferred
Minimum five (5) years of experience as a Controller in a mid-sized construction company
Advanced knowledge of GAAP and compliance reporting
Experience coordinating with IT on accounting systems and upgrades
ERP system implementation and hands-on experience required
Experience with construction ERP systems preferred (e.g., CMiC or similar)
Strong communication and presentation skills
Demonstrated leadership and team development ability
Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills
Experience working with external auditors and internal controls
