Controller

Location: Wilmington, NC
Reports To: Chief Financial Officer
Status: Exempt, Full-Time

Job Summary

The Controller is a hands-on leader responsible for overseeing all day-to-day accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance activities for the organization and its affiliates. This role ensures accurate financial statements, strong internal controls, audit coordination, and regulatory compliance while managing and developing the finance team.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage daily operations of the Finance Department, including payroll, AP, AR, general ledger, banking, and cash flow
• Prepare accurate monthly financial statements, management reports, and board presentations
• Lead annual budgeting process and monitor financial performance
• Coordinate all external audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting
• Ensure GAAP compliance, internal controls, and risk mitigation
• Supervise and develop finance staff; evaluate performance
• Oversee fixed assets, investments, escheatment, and procurement participation
• Serve as a financial resource to leadership and department managers

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
• 7+ years of accounting experience with supervisory responsibility
• CPA license or Master’s in Accounting preferred
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and governmental/nonprofit accounting standards
• Excellent analytical, communication, and leadership skills
• Experience working with auditors, compliance, and internal controls
• Must be bondable and able to lift up to 20 lbs
