    The Controller will serve as a critical financial leader, ensuring strong financial stewardship, operational excellence, and data-driven decision-making that supports the organization’s mission. This role partners closely with finance, grants, and program leadership to maintain financial integrity, improve processes, and support programs delivering vital services throughout the region.

    Position Overview

    The Controller oversees all day-to-day accounting operations while also leading financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls across multiple programs and departments.

    This role serves as a key partner to senior leadership, ensuring accurate financial data, supporting grant and fund accounting, and contributing to financial planning, compliance, and continuous improvement across the organization.

    Key Responsibilities

    Financial Leadership & Reporting

    • Lead monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
    • Oversee preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules
    • Ensure accuracy of financial statements in accordance with GAAP
    • Maintain integrity of accounting records and financial reporting processes

    Accounting Operations Oversight

    Oversee all core accounting functions, including:

    • Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable
    • Cash receipts and general ledger activity
    • Payroll oversight
    • Fixed assets and credit card management

    Additional responsibilities include:

    • Maintaining and optimizing the chart of accounts
    • Ensuring proper transaction coding and financial accuracy
    • Supporting grant and fund accounting, including tracking restricted funds and ensuring compliance
    • Driving process improvements to increase efficiency and strengthen internal controls

    Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls

    • Lead and support annual audit processes, including preparation of schedules and documentation
    • Ensure adherence to internal controls and nonprofit compliance standards
    • Monitor contract compliance and financial documentation practices
    • Maintain audit readiness and strengthen financial governance

    Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Planning

    • Lead or support annual budgeting and forecasting processes
    • Provide budget-to-actual reporting, variance analysis, and financial insights
    • Partner with leadership and program teams to support financial decision-making

    Leadership & Team Development

    • Supervise and develop accounting staff
    • Provide coaching, training, and performance feedback
    • Foster a collaborative, service-oriented, and mission-driven team culture

    Qualifications

    • Associate’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; Bachelor’s preferred
    • Minimum of 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
    • 2+ years of nonprofit, grant, or fund accounting experience preferred
    • Prior leadership or supervisory experience strongly preferred
    • Experience working in an ERP system (beyond QuickBooks)
    • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting
    • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills
    • Experience with MIP or nonprofit accounting systems is a plus
    • Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
