  • Responsibilities

    The Controller will oversee all accounting operations, including financial reporting, month-end and year-end close, property accounting, and internal controls. This role will partner closely with executive leadership, ownership, and property management teams to support the company's growth strategy, while building and mentoring a growing accounting team. The ideal candidate is comfortable operating in a dynamic environment where processes are still being scaled and refined.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process across a growing portfolio of properties and entities
    • Prepare and review consolidated financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP
    • Manage property-level and corporate-level accounting, including CAM reconciliations, fixed assets, debt and loan accounting, and intercompany transactions
    • Build, scale, and mentor the accounting team as the organization grows, including hiring and training additional accounting staff
    • Design, implement, and strengthen internal controls and accounting policies to support a scalable, growing organization
    • Partner with executive leadership and ownership on financial reporting, budgeting, and strategic decision-making
    • Oversee cash management, treasury functions, and banking relationships
    • Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and lenders, coordinating audit and tax preparation processes
    • Support due diligence and accounting integration for new property acquisitions and dispositions
    • Evaluate and implement accounting systems and process improvements to support company growth, including potential ERP or property management software transitions
    • Ensure compliance with debt covenants, lender reporting requirements, and investor reporting obligations
    • Research and apply technical accounting guidance (ASC) as it relates to real estate transactions, including acquisitions, leases, and joint ventures

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA strongly preferred
    • 6 -12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including prior leadership or management experience
    • Real estate industry experience required, including property accounting and multi-entity consolidations
    • Public accounting background (Big 4 or national/regional firm) a plus
    • Strong knowledge of US GAAP, real estate-specific accounting issues, and internal controls
    • Experience with property management/accounting software (Yardi, MRI, AppFolio, or similar) required
    • Proven ability to build and scale accounting processes and teams in a high-growth environment
    • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
    • Comfortable operating with a degree of ambiguity and adapting processes as the company evolves

    Preferred Attributes

    • Experience with acquisitions, dispositions, or portfolio growth in a real estate environment
    • Experience working directly with ownership, investors, or private equity sponsors
    • Track record of building or scaling an accounting department during a period of rapid growth
    • Experience with joint venture accounting and investor reporting
  • Compensation
    $175,000 per year
