Job Overview:
Carbon Reform is seeking a Controls Engineer to spearhead the innovation and implementation of advanced control systems for our carbon capture technology. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, deployment, and optimization of control systems that ensure maximum operational efficiency and reliability of our proprietary carbon capture technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop control systems and automation solutions for HVAC-integrated carbon capture equipment, including programming and sourcing PLCs and other equipment for commercial building automation systems
- Create and maintain technical documentation for control systems, including electrical schematics, control logic diagrams, and operating procedures.
- Coordinate with external partners, including customers' facilities operators and controls contractors to integrate our systems with theirs, including programming and front-end graphics development across multiple platforms, languages and protocols.
- Troubleshoot and optimize control systems to improve equipment performance and energy efficiency.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, software, and chemical engineers to integrate control systems with physical equipment design.
- Collaborate with marketing and sales teams to communicate capabilities externally and cross functionally.
- Implement data collection and monitoring systems to track key performance metrics and iterate on any updates or improvements, with remote software updates and physical hardware updates at customer locations as needed.
- Develop and maintain communication protocols between local equipment devices, cloud infrastructure and BMS.
- Support field deployment and commissioning of control systems.
- Provide technical support for installed systems and train operational staff.
Qualifications:
Required
- 4+ years of experience in commercial and/or industrial controls and automation in the HVAC environment
- Expertise in PLC programming (Tridium, Niagra, BACnet, ModBus)
- Proficiency in C++, Python or similar programming languages
- Proficiency in HMI/SCADA development and implementation
- Strong understanding of industrial networking protocols (MSTP, EtherNet/IP, etc.)
- Familiarity with sensor integration and data acquisition systems
- Experience with AutoCAD/Solidworks Electrical or similar electrical design software
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Excellent communication and documentation skills

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Software Engineering, or related field
- Knowledge of carbon capture, air handling systems, fans, motors and PID controllers
- Familiarity with IoT platforms and cloud connectivity
- Understanding of regulatory requirements for industrial control systems
- Previous experience in a startup environment and desire to be part of a growing team implementing novel technologies
