Job Description

The Corning Museum of Glass, the international leader in the pursuit and dissemination of knowledge about the art, history, science, and technology of glass and glassmaking has an exciting opportunity for an intern to participate in a summer-long internship with our Flameworking and Properties of Glass Demonstration Team.

The preferred candidate will be trained to perform demonstrations and work on the front line with our guests. The demonstrations to be presented include Flameworking, Glass Breaking, and Optical Fiber (if the candidate is qualified, this may also include participation in Hot Glass Demos as well).

This internship is an opportunity for a glass student to greatly broaden their knowledge of the possibilities of the material. The selected candidate will be thoroughly trained in many aspects of glass science, flameworking, glass history, and public speaking.

This is a particularly exciting time to work at The Corning Museum of Glass as we opened a new North Wing addition in March 2015. This new space adds 100,000 square feet to our facility. The expansion includes a 26,000 square-foot Contemporary Glass Gallery which will allow us to exhibit works on a much more grand scale than ever before. We have also added a 500-seat Hot Glass Amphitheater that is equipped with some of the most state-of-the-art equipment and capabilities ever assembled in one studio.

TRAINING:

• Training on a broad array of glass science topics including fiber optics, mechanical forming processes, and strain-related issues
• Training in presentation and public speaking skills
• Training on the collections and exhibitory of The Corning Museum of Glass
• At least one day per week of additional flameworking lessons and training with master flameworker Eric Goldschmidt

OPPORTUNITIES:

• Clearly and accurately deliver engaging technical glass presentations to CMoG guests including Optical Fiber, Glass Breaking, and Flameworking to CMoG standards
• Set up work areas with proper demonstration tools, equipment, and supplies
• Expand knowledge of the history, craft, technology, and art of glass
• Become familiar with the museum, the library, and the museum’s exhibits
• Ensure that all safety policies and procedures meet CMoG’s standards
• Maintain neat, clean, and tidy personal grooming and appearance to CMoG standards
• Produce glass objects to CMoG standards
