    Position Summary

    The Corporate Chief Engineer provides strategic and operational leadership for engineering and maintenance functions across all facilities. This is an executive-level, field-based position requiring hands-on technical involvement, regional travel, and active leadership over maintenance systems, capital projects, and team development. The successful candidate will lead plant-level engineers, maintain system reliability, support equipment and infrastructure initiatives, and ensure compliance with applicable safety and environmental standards.

    Key Performance Objectives (First 12 Months)

    1\. Team Leadership & Engineering Oversight

    • Supervise and coach head engineers and technicians across multiple states.
    • Standardize best practices in preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and system upgrades.
    • Collaborate with executive leadership as a member of the operations committee.

    2\. Maintenance Program Modernization

    • Evaluate existing preventative/predictive maintenance (PM) systems at all locations.
    • Drive improvements that reduce downtime, increase safety, and enhance asset life.
    • Implement documentation standards and reporting systems for maintenance activities.

    3\. Capital Projects & Equipment Strategy

    • Oversee planning and execution of capital projects (equipment purchase and installation).
    • Ensure equipment meets efficiency, compliance, and reliability standards.
    • Lead hands-on inspections and decision-making for utility systems and mechanical troubleshooting.

    4\. Regulatory Compliance & Reporting

    • Conduct facility inspections to maintain compliance with state and federal permit regulations.
    • Monitor and report on safety, environmental, and performance metrics across the portfolio.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Direct leadership of head plant engineers and maintenance teams.
    • Engage in hands-on support of electrical systems, PLCs, boilers, hydraulics, pneumatics, and compressors.
    • Coordinate and improve preventive maintenance strategies.
    • Collaborate on facility upgrades and infrastructure improvements.
    • Promote continuous improvement and safety culture throughout the engineering function.

    Required Qualifications

    • Minimum 5 years of engineering or maintenance leadership experience in an industrial, manufacturing, or plant setting.
    • Proven experience with multi-site operations and regional team oversight.
    • Strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, including:
      ? Steam and water systems
      ? Air compressors and boilers
      ? PLC systems and troubleshooting
      ? Welding, piping, hydraulics, pneumatics, and facility maintenance
    • Comfortable with flexible travel schedule (~2 weeks/quarter, by vehicle).
    • Effective communication and organizational skills.
    • Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs as part of hands-on troubleshooting and inspections.

    Preferred Qualifications (Not Required)

    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
    • Familiarity with robotics, automation systems, or smart manufacturing environments.
    • Stationary engineering license or certification.
    • Interest in pursuing a Professional Engineering (PE) license.
    • Experience in regulated environments or with multi-state compliance.

    Work Environment & Travel Expectations

    • Based out of Central Virginia with travel to company facilities across MD, OH, WV, and surrounding areas.
    • Travel primarily by car; overnight stays expected ~2 weeks per quarter.
    • Combination of office-based coordination and on-site, hands-on field leadership.
