Cosmetology Instructor Responsibilities
The Cosmetology Instructor is responsible for providing instruction and supervision to students enrolled in the cosmetology program. The instructor must ensure that all training meets the educational standards and regulatory requirements established by the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) and the Virginia Board for Barbers and Cosmetology.
Must hold an active Cosmetology Instructor License issued by DPOR in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Maintain the instructor license in good standing and comply with all state regulations and professional standards.
Stay informed about regulatory updates issued by the Virginia Board for Barbers and Cosmetology.
Provide classroom instruction and practical demonstrations in cosmetology theory and practical skills.
Teach subjects including hair cutting, hair styling, hair coloring, chemical services, scalp treatments, skin care basics, nail care, sanitation, and infection control.
Prepare students with the knowledge and practical skills required to qualify for the Virginia cosmetology licensing examination.
Utilize effective instructional methods such as lectures, demonstrations, multimedia presentations, and supervised hands-on practice.
Supervise students during practical training and clinic services to ensure safe and professional performance of cosmetology services.
Monitor student progress and provide guidance to help students meet required competencies.
Ensure that students follow sanitation, safety, and infection control standards in accordance with state regulations.
Teach according to the state-approved cosmetology curriculum and required clock hours established by DPOR.
Follow the institution’s lesson plans, instructional schedules, and program objectives.
Assist in maintaining and updating curriculum materials to reflect industry developments and regulatory requirements.
Evaluate student performance through written exams, practical assessments, and competency demonstrations.
Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, practical hours, and student progress.
Provide feedback to students regarding their performance and areas needing improvement.
Ensure that all training activities comply with DPOR regulations, institutional policies, and safety standards.
Assist the institution in preparing documentation required during regulatory inspections or audits.
Maintain a professional training environment that meets state sanitation and safety requirements.
Ensure proper use and maintenance of cosmetology tools and equipment.
Monitor sanitation procedures and ensure compliance with infection control practices.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized instructional and clinical environment.
Demonstrate professionalism, ethical behavior, and industry best practices.
Serve as a role model for students in professional appearance, communication, and client service.
Foster a positive and supportive learning environment.
