    Job Summary

    The Theatrical Costume Stylist is responsible for using an existing supply of costume pieces or ordering additional pieces to assemble, fit, style, and transport costumes for 6 to 12 musical theatre productions with cast sizes ranging from 25 - 45 kids ages 5 to 12 years old and is a core player in helping our students boost their confidence. We take a connected, student forward approach to our costuming. Our costume stylist works closely with instructors, leaders, and cast members to ensure students feel great on show day.

    Summer Costume Projects

    Costuming of 12 children's musical theatre productions, 20-45 kids per production over the course of 9 weeks using current Kid Stock costume resources plus some additional purchased costumes pieces with a small to moderate budget.

    Per Production Responsibilities

    Read the show summary/character overview, or read full script where necessary.

    Study the cast list and number of students

    Visit rehearsal location to take cast costume photos, meet the cast, and make sizing notes

    Conduct a costume "interview" with each student (only when time allows as directed by supervisor). At Kid Stock we believe student opinions matter, our costume "interview" is a conversation between costumer and student to ensure that we understand any costume fears, needs, or wishes our students have before we bring over costumes for thier first fitting. This is sometimes facilitated in other ways by instructors on site and the information is then given to the costumer.

    Conduct an initial pull of resources from current costume shop

    Assemble base costumes for each show character or character group

    Determine supplies needed to complete costumes for each character or character group

    Order needed supplies timely and within budget

    Organize and pack up costumes to transport to show rehearsal location

    Transport costumes to rehearsal location

    Organize and set up costumes at rehearsal location

    Conduct a first "fitting"(i.e. each student try's on costume, costumer makes safety pin adjustments or notes when items need to be replaced) *We avoid permanent altering of our costumes but use safety pin magic to make sure costumes fit properly but can be returned to their original state whenever possible to be used for other students or in other ways in the future.

    Pull additional items needed after first fitting from costume shop or order needed items.

    Organize and transport additional items back to rehearsal site

    conduct 2nd fitting where needed on additional items

    Determine all under items or base items students will need to bring from home

    Write costume note to send home to families so they can send base items with their student

    Keep costume items from home organized and facilitate instructing students on managing their personal items

    Lead costume dressing and return on show day

    Complete costume clean up/strike and return costume items back to costume shop after show

    Launder/clean/restock all used costumes

    Lead the seeking and instructing of volunteers if/when needed

    Request and lead instruction of production assistant if/when needed

    Job Qualifications

    Education: 2-4 years. in related field, or equivalent experience

    Experience: 2-4 years experience in costuming and working with children ages 5-12, or related experience

    Driver’s License and transportation required
