About the Opportunity
A long-established specialty carrier working across New York City and the greater tri-state area is seeking a Crater / Packer to build custom crates and prepare high-value pieces for transport, export and storage. This is craft work on one-of-a-kind objects, not warehouse packing. The company holds Master Rigger and Special Rigger licenses and is a recognized name in crane hoisting, monumental and fine art transport, installation, and climate-controlled storage.
Key Responsibilities
- Build custom crates around awkward, high-value and irregular pieces, designed around the object, not pulled off a shelf.
- Pack and prepare work to travel safely by road and for export, including the bracing, cushioning and moisture protection each piece calls for.
- Select materials and methods appropriate to the object, its value and its destination.
- Carry out installation work on site, where the same handling judgment applies.
- Work alongside riggers, drivers and site crews on active job sites, and in galleries, institutions and private residences.
- Handle client property with the care and discretion the setting demands.
- Keep the shop organized, safe and ready for the next job.
Qualifications
- Hands-on experience crating, packing or fabricating for fine art, antiques, machinery, millwork or another high-value trade. Capability matters more here than length of service.
- Real woodworking ability — measuring, cutting and building a sound crate from scratch.
- An eye for how an object should be supported, braced and protected in transit.
- Comfort on active job sites and in occupied spaces. Installation is part of the work, not an occasional extra.
- Care, patience and attention to detail. What passes through this shop is often irreplaceable.
- Reliability above all.
Compensation
$25.00 to $35.00 per hour, depending on experience, plus the benefits below.
Benefits
- Medical coverage offered after six months, with the company paying 50% of employee coverage.
- 401(k) with a 4% company match. Plan information is provided before your six-month anniversary.
- Paid holidays, vacation and sick days, per the company handbook.
- Steady, year-round work, not project-to-project hiring.
