    JOB SUMMARY

    Crowell & Moring LLP invites Electrical, Computer, and Mechanical engineering students to apply for a 10-week PAID internship in our Crowell Engineering in Law Program (CEIL), exploring a career in the world of intellectual property law. The CEIL Diversity Program is one of our many diversity programs aimed at promoting diversity at our Firm and in the legal profession.

    Our talented CEIL Intern will support the Intellectual Property Group in patent-related matters. This position may be virtual, based in our Washington, D.C., or Chicago, IL offices, with a full-time commitment to work 37.5 hours a week, 5 days a week over the internship period. Our offices are located at 1001 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20004 or 455 N. Cityfront Plaza Drive, Suite 3600, Chicago, IL 60611, respectively.

    After applying, select candidates will be invited to interview. Hiring decisions are announced in late February/early March and the internship starts in May of the same year. For the 2022 program year, we will select one program participant.

     

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

    Our CEIL Intern will perform a variety of tasks and services that serve the intellectual property needs of the firm’s clients. They include:

    • Training in United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) procedures in order to assist clients in filing and obtaining US patents on their inventions.
    • Evaluate USPTO actions against applications and develop strategies for responding.
    • Analyze the technical aspects of patent applications to understand and distill the scientific basis of the invention.
    • Draft technical summaries for attorney review.
    • Research and report on patent filings in specific technical areas and monitor a technology area.

    • Strong academic credentials.
    • An undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in an engineering or equivalent program from an accredited university and currently in their junior or senior year. Ph.D. student candidates will be considered as well.
