    Summary/Objective

    Under the umbrella of CAN, the Homeless Shelter’s mission is to provide a safe, clean, and supportive community which helps stabilize homeless men by promoting self-worth, providing linkages to community resources, and encouraging personal responsibility. The Custodian supports CAN’s mission by ensuring that shelter residents are in a clean, safe, and sanitary environment.

    Essential Functions

    Directly responsible for maintaining a clean and healthy environment for residents, staff, and volunteers by performing a variety of cleaning and maintenance duties, utilizing daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly checklists

    Sweep, mop, and clean office and program delivery areas

    Remove garbage throughout the building, including program office areas

    Clean floors, restrooms and other assigned areas as needed

    Clean messes, spills and debris as needed

    Utilize cleaning supplies and equipment appropriately

    Monitor inventory of cleaning supplies and informs the Shelter Manager in a timely manner when supplies are needed

    Report routine observations of residential and public areas to supervisory staff including conditions that may affect the safety and/or security of residents, staff, or volunteers

    Facilitate effective communication with other staff members

    Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled

    Minimum Skills/Qualifications

    High school diploma or GED required

    At least 6 months of cleaning, custodial or janitorial experience in a social services environment

    Some human service experience preferred

    Strong interpersonal skills

    Knowledge of cleaning methods for various surfaces, including floors

    Proficiency in operating cleaning equipment

    Knowledge of safe handling and proper use of cleaning chemicals and disinfectants

    Basic knowledge of minor building maintenance

    Understanding and adherence to health and safety regulations, such as OSHA standards

    Sits, stands, bends, lifts and move continually during work hours and is subject to lifting over 50lbs

    Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

    Abilities and Skills

    Basic computer skills (able to access and send emails, join meetings virtually, etc.)

    Good decision-making and problem-solving skills

    Good communication skills, both oral and written

    Must be organized, flexible and dedicated to quality service delivery

    Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others

    Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively

    Demonstrate integrity and ethical standards in job performance

    Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
