    Direct Support Professional – Job Description

    Overview A Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides personalized assistance and encouragement to individuals with developmental, intellectual, or physical disabilities, helping them live as independently as full participants in their communities.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Assist clients with daily living activities (e.g., personal hygiene, meal preparation, medication reminders).
    • Foster independence by teaching life‑skills, social interaction, and community‑navigation techniques.
    • Monitor and document client progress, behaviors, and health changes.
    • Collaborate with case managers, therapists, and families to implement individualized support plans.
    • Advocate for clients’ rights and ensure a safe, respectful environment.
    • Respond to emergencies, providing first aid or crisis intervention as needed.

    Qualifications

    • High school diploma or GED; Associate’s degree in human services or related field preferred.
    • Prior experience working with people with disabilities (volunteer or paid).
    • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
    • Clear background check and driver’s license (if transporting clients).

    Essential Skills

    • Strong communication and active‑listening abilities.
    • Patience, empathy, and a positive, supportive attitude.
    • Ability to problem‑solve quickly and adapt to changing situations.
    • Physical stamina to lift, transfer, or assist clients as required.

    Work Environment

    • Community settings: homes, group homes, day programs, or supported employment sites.
    • Schedule may include evenings, weekends, or holidays based on client needs.

    Compensation
