JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary
The DNA analyst performs routine analysis of biological samples. Prepares accurate and precise notes and technical reports. Performs maintenance, calibration, and quality control on scientific instruments.
This is a safety sensitive position as defined by state and federal laws that will require working with hazardous materials and/or handling medicine. As a "safety sensitive" classification, you will be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing. Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening. Possession of a medical marijuana license will not excuse you from the testing process, or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.
Essential Functions
Extract DNA using multiple extraction procedures and quantify on a Real-Time PCR instrument.
Amplify DNA using current, validated amplification kits and analyze samples on current genetic analyzer platforms.
Utilize and maintain a variety of modern scientific equipment such as Real-Time PCR, thermal cyclers, and genetic analyzers.
Perform statistical analysis and interpretation of DNA results.
Prepare forensic and other reports.
Competencies
Ability to work within existing Quality regime.
Experience with DNA extraction, amplification and analysis.
Sound scientific decision-making in relation to DNA interpretation.
Ability to work in a high paced DNA laboratory, with a high diversity of work flows.
5.Adherence to all DNA Solutions safety standards, policies, protocols and procedures.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
This job operates in a fast-paced laboratory environment
This role routinely uses standard office and laboratory equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, thermocyclers, centrifuges and genetic analysers.
Physical Demands
This is a largely sedentary role; however, some carrying of supplies and equipment is required. Standing for long periods of time is sometimes required.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position.
Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, approximately 8:00 a.m. to approximately 6:00 p.m. Occasional weekend work may be required.
Travel
Some overnight and local day travel may be necessary (0-10%) and may include weekends.
Required Education and Experience
A bachelor or advanced degree in physical, biological or forensic science from an accredited college or university. A minimum of 9 credit hours of college coursework (graduate or undergraduate level) graded at a “C” or better covering the subject areas of biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology (molecular genetics or recombinant DNA technology) is required.
Preferred Education and Experience
2 or more years of experience working as a qualified DNA analyst in a laboratory setting.
Experience processing Sexual Assault Kits
Previously or presently qualified in Globalfiler and Y-filer Plus
