Drew University Theological School seeks applications for a tenure-track ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN JEWISH STUDIES beginning August 2022, pending budgetary approval.
The Wallerstein professorship in Jewish Studies was founded in 1990 by Madeleine and Julian Wallerstein to promote the University-wide study of Jewish wisdom, life, and history at Drew University in ways that are broadly ecumenical and that contribute to the training of Methodist and other Protestant seminarians, and to increase interreligious understanding and appreciation of Jewish contributions to world cultures.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Teach introductory and advanced courses in Jewish Studies, both in the University’s Theological School and in the College of Liberal Arts. Courses should have particular emphasis in Jewish religious, moral, and social visions and practices, and in the study of Judaism within interfaith studies.
● Provide leadership for the University’s new dual degrees between the College of Liberal Arts and the Theological School, and collaborate with University colleagues around the interdisciplinary undergraduate religion major and cross-university programs in religion.
● Develop an active research program in the candidate’s area of expertise.
● Be an active and engaged member of the Drew community through participation in Theological School and University service.
The typical teaching load at the Theological School is four courses distributed over the academic year in addition to a course equivalent of directing religion programs, advising students, and mentoring student research across our degree programs. Teaching responsibilities include graduate courses open to advanced undergraduates and at least one course per year offered primarily for undergraduate students.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, INTEREST, AND EXPERIENCE:
The successful candidate should have a PhD either in Jewish Studies or the Study of Religion by August 1, 2022.
The successful candidate will have interest in teaching Jewish Studies within a social-justice committed, globally-oriented, interfaith-attuned, and ecumenically-minded United Methodist seminary embedded in a liberal arts University.
