    Summary/Purpose

    The Assistant Analytical Chemist will assist scientists testing biopolymers to build useful and unique biodegradable products. The Assistant Analytical Chemist will perform analyses of process samples and provide material characterization data to R&D and Operations to assist in the development and creation of new polymer materials, while continuing to provide useful data for existing products and processes. To perform these tasks, the Assistant Analytical Chemist will use knowledge of analytical chemistry, biology, materials science and sometimes computer modeling programs to help perform the analyses.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Test and analyze components and the physical properties of biopolymers and process samples.• Execute proper chemical and/or microbial processing and testing procedures, such as ingredients, mixing times, and operating temperatures.• Prepare samples, solutions, compounds, and reagents used in laboratory procedures.• Perform instrumental analyses of materials and process samples.• Conduct tests on materials and other substances to ensure that safety and quality standards are met.• Complete documentation and reporting for all analyses performed including timely entries in logbooks and laboratory databases as needed.• Write technical reports that detail methods and findings.• Present analytical findings to scientists, engineers, and other colleagues.• Perform instrument calibration, maintenance and interact with manufacturers service technicians to solve operational or other instrument problems.• Maintain appropriate levels of laboratory supplies by inventorying and ordering consumables and other required materials.• Other duties as assigned.

    Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Microbiology or other related discipline required.• Up to 5 years of industrial laboratory experience.• Interdependent partnering skills, team-orientation necessary.• Excellent organizational, communication and time management skills needed to manage multiple ongoing projects simultaneously.• Must be able to innovate, analyze and solve common laboratory problems.Associates degree or relevant employment experience in a scientific field required.

    Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Proficient in using computers with Windows Operating System including Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.• Ability to effectively manage workload to meet aggressive timelines.• Excellent oral and written communication skills. • Able to interact, cooperate, and motivate across departments and functions.• Stays current on all applicable SOPs, safety, human resource, and annual laboratory quality related training.• Prior experience using LIMS systems a plus.• Knowledge about polymer industry, products and technologies.

    Work Environment/Physical Demands:

    Work is performed in a chemical and analytical laboratory setting. In the laboratory setting there will be handle non-pathogenic biological objects and chemical agents.

    Work is performed using office equipment with substantial time spent working on a computer. Requires sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate computer keyboard and other office and laboratory equipment.

    Requires walking, climbing stairs, bending and occasional lifting of material up to fifty (50) pounds.

    Performance of this position will require exposure to laboratory hazards which require the use of personal protective equipment.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

    This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
