Day Zero Diagnostics (DZD) is an exciting startup revolutionizing infectious disease diagnostics, by leveraging cutting-edge sample prep technologies, whole genome sequencing, and machine learning algorithms. We are building the next generation of in-vitro diagnostics (IVDs), able to perform comprehensive pathogen ID and antimicrobial susceptibility (AST) profiling in less than 8 hours, without the need for traditional microbiology culturing, which can take days.
Our first application is for sepsis, a serious infection of the bloodstream. Sepsis is responsible for a third of hospital deaths and over $60B in annual costs in the US alone. Using the current culture-based approach for pathogen ID and AST takes 2-5 days and has a 40% failure rate. Because of the long time to diagnosis, patients with sepsis are currently treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics, leading to significant toxicity, higher rates of organ injury, increased risk of c. difficile infection, and exacerbation of global antibiotic resistance. By providing an accurate and comprehensive diagnosis within the first cycle of treatment, patients can get appropriate antibiotic therapy for systemic infections such as sepsis, reducing hospital treatment durations/costs and saving lives.
At Day Zero Diagnostics we are passionate about our mission to modernize infectious disease diagnosis and treatment. Employees work in a multidisciplinary and fast-paced start-up, and have ample opportunities to acquire new skills, engage with emerging technologies, work closely with our accomplished team, and communicate their results, all while working in a supportive and energetic environment. At Day Zero Diagnostics, we greatly value building a diverse and inclusive community and believe diversity is integral to excellence, and that inclusivity of different voices leads to better teamwork and innovation. As part of the team, your work will directly contribute to the success of the company at revolutionizing patient care. We work in an exceptional research setting with state-of-the-art facilities and are looking for someone to join the team immediately.
JOB DUTIES:
The Research Scientist will lead scientific research to optimize and develop methods for library construction and sequencing using Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) sequencing devices. The Research Scientist must have a strong scientific background and be able to develop a detailed knowledge of the sample preparation methods being developed by the company and its use of ONT sequencing, with a background in relevant scientific disciplines (molecular biology, microbiology and cellular biology). They must be able to think analytically to assist with the development of scientific strategies to solve challenging problems, and both design and carry out hands-on experiments in the lab. The Research Scientist will be responsible for overseeing a small team of research associates and must be able to supervise and support the team to successfully execute milestone driven plans. They will also work closely with the Production Sequencing team to collaborate on protocol optimization and transfer. The Research Scientist will report directly to the CSO and will have opportunities to interface with senior leadership, external partners, and funders.
